BOX CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 23, 1915.
Application filed July 24, 1913. Serial No. 780,969.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE vVM. PALMER, a resident of Louisville, Kentucky, Whose post-office address is 1888 Melwood avenue, have made certain new. and useful Improvements in Box Construction, of which the following is a specification.
My invention applies to box construction in which reinforcing strips are used in only one direction to reinforce substantially the connections between the end members, side members, and top and bottom members so as to produce an extremely simple, yet very durable structure.
A practical embodiment of my invention is shown in the drawings, in which' Figure 1 is a perspective view without the top and Fig. 2 a detailed perspective view showing the top cover member,
My box construction is built upon substantial end members 2, vertically recessed to receive the ends of the relatively thin side members 1. The top and bottom members 3 are of ordinary construction, are fastened to and connect the end members 2, and are flush with the outer surfaces of and position side members 1.
The reinforcing strips 4 are flush with the vertical end surfaces of the end members 2 and fastened to a side surface thereof against the surfacesof the side members 1 and against the side edges of the top andbottom members 3. The ends of the reinforcing strips t are flush with the main outer surfaces of the top and bottom members 3. Thus theyprotect the overhanging portions of the end members 2, protect and hold against outward displacement the said members 1, and position the top and bottom members 3 while protecting their edges and corners.
With this structure full reinforcement is produced with a minimum of connection, a minimum of reinforcing pieces, and with reinforcing pieces extending in one direction only. It makes possible thin side members and top and bottom members in a very sub stantial box. I do not limitmyself further than is indicated in the claim. V
I claim:
In box construction, relatively substantial end members, relatively thin side members, top and bottom members, a reinforcing strip bearing against said ends and side members and the edges ofsaid top and bottom members; said endmembers being recessed to receive the ends of said side members, and overhanging the ends of said side members a substantial distance, and being connected and positioned by said top and bottom 1nem bers; said side members being positioned sidewise and endwis'e by the recessed portions of said end members and being held in said recesses by said top and bottom members; said reinforcing strips being fastened to said end members and bearing closely against the outer surfaces of said side members and the sideedges of said top and bottom members.
GEORGE WM. PALMER.
