Be it known that I, HARRY J. Monnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Syracuse, Onondaga county, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Electric-Lamp-Retaining Devices, of which the following is a speci-' poor electrical contact of parts of the lamp with parts of the socket which results in injurious arcing in the socket.
li i'y invention has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive device which may be applied to the ordinary threaded shell of a lamp socket or receptacle with but slight changes in the shell to receive the retaining device.
The objects and novel features of my invention. will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the drawing, in which,
Figure 1 shows a retaining device embodying my invention in place on an electric lamp receptacle, a part of the receptacle being broken away; Fig. 2 is another view oi? the same; Fig. 3 is a transverse sec-- tional view through the receptacle showing the retaining device in place therein before the lamp is inserted; and Fig. 4- 18 a perspective view of the retaining device.
Referring to the drawing, designates the base of an ordinary lamp receptaclewhich has the usual permanent connections 11 tor the w1res of the electr1c c1rcu1t and supports the usual threaded copper shell 12 which receives the threaded base 13 of an incandescent lamp 14. The threads on the interior of the shell 12 produce corresponding grooves on the exterior thereof. The shell 12 has two slots 15 and 16 therein which extend transversely of the threads and corresponding grooves and through the wall of the shell a. slight distance from the upper edge thereof.
The device for retaining the lamp in place comprises a piece of stifl' spring wire 17 curved in theiorm of a semicircle and of a diameter to fit in one of the grooves on the exterior of the shell 12. The wire 17 plane of the body part of the wire.

The inherent resiliency of the wire 17 will hold the retaining device in place on the shell 12 and the ends 18 and 19 will be yieldingly held in position on the interior of the shell so that when they are engaged by the base 13 of the incandescent lamp they will yield slightly and the ends will follow the threads on the lamp so as to trictionally and yieldingly engage the base thereof and prevent the lamp from working loose in its socket. When the base of the. lamp is inserted in the socket the ends of the wire will be forced outwardly slightly from the position shown in Fig. 3, as shown in'Fig. 1. lhe stifiness and resiliency of the wire, together with the edges of the slots in the shell, will serve to hold the wire-in place and prevent it from becoming detached.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is: I
1. A lamp retaining device comprising a curved spring having a. part near each end bent inwardly toward the center of curvature of said spring and upwardly out 'of the plane of the body of the spring.
2. The combination with a lamp sorket shell having holes in its wall, of a l? retaining device partly encircling said shell and comprising a piece of spring wire having a part near each end bent, one bent part extending into each hole whereby the lie iii,
are capable of yieldingly engaging a lamp base and preventing the vibration of the same.
3. In an incandescent lamp socket, the
5 combination of a threaded cylindrical shell having slots in its wall on substantially opposite sides thereof, said slots extending transversely of the threads on said shell. and a lamp retaining device comprising a 10 curved spring fitting in a groove corresponding to one of the threads of said shell, said spring having a part at each end bent innwirdly so as to extend through one of said slots.
