Be it known. that I, -OHARLEs HENRY /VAoHoLz, aciti'zen of the United States, re-
siding at Santa Clara, .in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented a new and useful Guard for Woodworking-Machines; and Ido hereby declare the following to be .a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved guard for a wood working machine having a vertical cutter head rising from the table of the machine, 'and'an object of the invention is to provide a device of this design to protect the fingers and hands of the operator against accidentally coming in contact with the blades of the 'cutter head.
Another object of the invention is to provide a guard involving improved features of construction. 1
One of-the features of construction is, the
provision of a standard, to which an arm has universal connections, at the free end of which arm a holder is connected, to which in turn the sleeve is adjustably fixed, said sleeve having a cage constituting a guard to protect the fingers and hands .of the operaton against accidental injury by the blades of'the cutter head.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further featuresand combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the bed plate of a wood working machine (not shown), and to which plate a plate 2 having dove-tailed guide flanges 3 bolted, as shown at t. Mounted in the guide flanges is a standard or frame 5, which may be held in adjusted positions in the guides by the set bolts'6. Secured at 7 to the top of the frame or standard is the base plate 8 of asemi-cylindrical bearing member 9, which receives the sleeve 10, there being a screw 11 GUARD iron WOODWORKING-MACHINES.

The collar 13 holds the pin against passing entirely through the bearing and the sleeve, in other words, prevents the pin from falling out. The sleeve 10 has a lateral portion 15, which is bifurcated, as shown at 16. An ear 17 of the arm 18 is pivoted in the bifurcation 16 by the pivot pin 19. The inter-engaging shoulder 20 and 21 of the arm 18 and the. lateral projection 16 constitute means to hold the arm in the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2. -However, it will be observed the arm is freeto move upwardly a short distance. The free end of the arm has a sleeve bearing 22, in which a pin 23 is mounted, there being a splitcollar 24 having a set screw 25 for holding the pin 23 in the sleeve bearing. Threaded to the lower end of the pin 23 is a cyliridrical part 26 of the spider plate 27, the arms 28 of which are bolted or otherwise secured at 29 to the cylinder or sleeve 30.
The cylinder 30 is provided with a rib 31 having ratchet teeth 32. The'rib 31 extends or fits into a groove 33 of the inner circumference of the sleeve 34, which telescopes the cylinder 30. The sleeve 34 has a lateral hollow projection 35, in which a spring tensioned pin 36 is mounted, the nose 37 of which engages any one of the ratchet teeth 32 of the rib 31, to hold the sleeve 34 in adjusted positions upon the cylinder 30. It will be observed that the rib prevents rotation of the sleeve 34, and also that the sleeve tact with the blades of the cutter head' of the wood working machine (not shown) is provided. This guard is in the form of a. cage, consisting of the upper and law er rings 39 and 40, connected-by the rodsal. The guard or cage is securedto the sleeve 34, by'
hands of the operator from coming in conlot the set bolts or screws '42, which are threaded through the upper ring 39. It will be noted that the cage or guard may be adjusted very permit a piece of timber or board or the like,

In combination, a standard, an arm having universal connections with the upper portion of the standard, a cylinder suspended from the free end of the arm, a sleeve telescopically mounted upon the cylinder and having'a guard connected to its lower part, the inner circumference of the sleeve having a groove, the cylinder having a rib provided with ratchet teeth fitting the groove to guide the sleeve when adjusted vertically,
and a spring tensioned pin mounted in thewall of the sleeve for engaging the teeth for holding the sleeve in vertical adjusted positions on the cylinder.
