OTTO M. IBEETZ, OF CQNEY ISLAND, NEW YORK.
ANTISKIDDING DEVICE FOR AUTOMOBILES.
Specification of LettersPatent.
. Patented Nov. 9, 1915.
Application filed January 15, 1915. Serial No. 2,452.
To all it may concern Be it known that I, Orro M. BEEJTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coney Island,-in the countypf'Kings'and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in AntiskiddingDevices for Automobiles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in non-skidding attachments to automobiles and consists essentially of receptacles mounted in advance of the rear wheels and adapted to contain sand or other der the control of the operator ofthe car for allowing the sand to be dropped when desired.
The invention comprises various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an automobile showing the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view "howing the two sand receptacles and spring-pressed doors hinged thereto with connections for opening the doors, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the receptacle and hinged door.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the body of an automobile and B are receptacles which may be of any suitable size'or shape, preferably as illustrated in the 'draw-.
mgs, and provided with inclined bottoms and exit openings 0 at thelower ends thereof. Each receptacle, there being one. fixed to the frame in advance of each rear wheel,
is provided with a flanged gate or door D, hinged at D to the box adjacent to the upper marginal edge of the exitopening, and springs, designated by letter E, are fastened one to each flange of the cover and to the box at L and normally hold the same closed. An angle bar, designated by letter N, is fastened to the door or gate and has an arm projecting therefrom to which a chain 0 is connected, which in turn passes to and about a pulley R and has a pull rod S secured thereto within convenient reach of the operator or driver of the machine. A foot lever, designated by letter T, is pivotally mounted upon the frame of the automobile and is also fastened to the chain which is secured to the door and affording means whereby the device may be operated by said foot lever, ifdesired, without requiring the hands of the operator which might be otherwise occupied.
By the construction ofan apparatus embodying the features of my invention, it,
will be noted that, by pulling upon the rod S or tilting the foot-operated lever T, both doors, which are connected together as shown,"
may be raised to let out as much sand as desired,'the springs being utilized for returning the doors to their normal positions.
What I claim to be new is: An anti-skidding device for automobiles comprising a receptacle for attachment to the frame ofa vehicle and provide with an exit opening at one end, a door hinged to the edge of said opening, an angled bar fastened to the door and having an arm projecting beyond the face-of the receptacle,
\ a chain connected to said arm, said door having flanges upon the opposite ends which,
when the door is closed, engage the opposite sides of the receptacle, and a spring connected to one of said flanges and normally holdin the door closed.
11 testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in presence'of two witnesses.
OTTO M. BEETZ. Witnesses: ANDREW .Wnmnx LAMMER,
G. W. LEFENT.
