Description

M. H. LOEFFLER.
WAISTBAND.
APPLICATION FILED 00115. I913.
Patented Nov. 9, 1915.
EE'EEE'E:
MORRIS H. LOEFFLER, OF GRAND JUNCTION, COLORADO.
WAISTBAND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 11915.
Application filed October 15, 1913. Serial N 0. 795,320.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MORRIS H. LOEFFLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Grand Junction, in the county of Mesa and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVaistbands; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Heretofore great difficulty has been experienced in properly supporting trousers or other like wearing apparel on the person by means of a belt, owing to the fact that, the belt loops usually provided for the purpose, permit the garment to be drawn away from the body and beneath the belt when unnatural or strained positions of the wearer are assumed.
This invention relates to means for receiving a belt whereby the garment supported thereby upon a person is efficiently maintained in proper position at all times, and wherein the means adapted to receive the belt is suitably associated with the garment in a manner to effect a much cheaper con struction thereof than heretofore.
It is an object of this invention to provide a garment having a belt tunnel associated therewith to receive a belt therethrough and thus afford a continuous support for the garment.
It is also an object of this invention to construct a device wherein a belt tunnel is afforded by wide margins at the waist of a garment, which are folded inwardly and bound with tape to afford a tunnel for a belt,
and at the same time serve to reinforce and stiffen the waist band of the garment, thus obviating the expensive construction involving the usual stiffening and lining elements of a garment waistband.
It is also an object of this invention to construct a device wherein supporting means for a garment are afforded by an inturned portion of fabriceither integral or attached thereto to afford continuous belt tunnel sections adapted to receive a belt inserted therethrough, to properly support the garment at the waist of a. wearer.
It is furthermore an object of this invention to construct a device wherein the expensive stiffeningand lining elements of present constructions are entirely obviated, and in their stead, a cheap and simple construction permitting the use of a belt for support, is afforded.
It is finally an object of this invention to provide a construction wherein the supporting means for a garment also serve to give the same the required stiffness at such a point. and yet flexible to a degree permitting adjustment thereof to various movements of a wearer.
The invention (in a preferred form) is hereinafter more fully described and defined in the accompanying drawings and specification.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the waistband of a pair of trousers embodying the principles of my invention. Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 22 of Fig.
1. Fig. 3 is a similar section showing a modified construction. Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 44 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 55 of Fig. 1.
As shown in the drawings: The reference numeral 1 indicates the upper portion of a garment which merges into the waistband, thegarment shown for convenience of illustration being a pair of trousers, although obviously my invention may be adapted to a skirt or any article of wearing apparel requiring a waistband. As shown more clearly in Fig. 2, the fabric 1, extends up wardly as indicated at 2, and is folded over as denoted at 3, on the interior of the garment, thus affording a tubular waistband capable of receiving a belt or other supporting means 4, inserted therethrough. The inturned marginal portion 3, of the fabric is joined to the outer portion 1, by means of any suitable taping fabric 5, which is stitched thereto. At the back of the waistband a V-notch 6, is provided, thus separating the belt tunnel into two portions, the garment of course being open at the front as is usual, said V-notch in the back permitting a certain amount of relative movement of the respective sections of the belt tunnel to facilitate insertion of the belt therethrough, and when in use, permitting the garment to adjust itself to various movements of the wearer. Each of the belt tunnel sections on the respective sides of an opening flap 7, in the garment, is provided with a slot 8, through which the ends of the belt project into view for the purpose of buckling and adjusting the same. As shown more par ticularly in Figs. 1, and 5, at the slot openings or apertures 8, the belt 4, after passing therethrough, extends over the outer surface of the fabric portion 2. i
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 3, if it is undesirable to provide the garment with an extended integral marginal portion 3, as shown in Fig. 2, a strip of other fabric, such as a lining material 9, may be stitched to the inturned extremity of the fabric portion 2, with the innermost edge of said fabric lining 9, stitched 'to'the fabric portion 1, thus afi'ording a tubular waistband suitable for retaining a belt 4, therethrough as before. This construction is slightly cheaper than that shown in Fig. 2, and effectively fulfils the purpose of the invention.
In order to strengthen the fabric at the notch 6 and slots 8, I revert said fabric, as indicated at 10 in Figs. 4 and 5, and stitch to the inner surfaces of the reverted portions of said fabric at those points the lining strips 11, the latter at their outer edges also being reverted where they are united with the reverted portions 10.
The operation is thought to be evident from the description.
I am aware that various details of construction' may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention. 1 therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
In a device of the class described, means for supporting a garment at the waistband comprising an inturned marginal portion forming a belt tunnel, said tunnel having openings at the rear and front to facilitate the insertion of a belt and permit adjustment of the waistband sections to the movements of the wearer, the edges of the fabric at said openings being reverted, and reinforcing linings sewed to said reverted portions at the inner sides of the latter and to the body of the fabric.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my'name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MORRIS H. LOEFFLER.
