Specification of Letters Patent. I
Application filed December 8, 1913. Serial No. 805,381.v
To all whom it may concern i Be it known that I, JOHN I. STEEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bakers-- field, -in the county vof Kern and State of California, have invented certain new 'and useful Improvements in Drop-Lights, of which the following is a' specification.
This invention relates to improvements in 4 electric drop lights of that class in which a cord conductor is wound upon a rotary mem-. ber or take-up medium so that the lamp can tion and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of said .specification and-Ain Figure 1 is a verticalsection through my improved'lamp. Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views. 1 designates a casing, which may be attached to the ceiling. 2, and within said casing'a rotary drum 3 is journaled upon a stationary shaft 4; said drum being supported at one end in a bracket 5 secured to ,they casing and the shaft 4 beingterminally supf riphery thereof, a conduit carried by said ported in a bracket 6 secured to the'casing. The interior of the drum 3 ispartitioned as at 7 through which partition the shaft 4 is projected and in one partitionedspace of said drum a spiral spring 8 is disposed, havlng one end secured to shaft 4 and the other end secured to the hollow disk 9 carried by the drum 3 and rotating with the same. The.
purpose of the spring is to rotate the drum upon the shaft. Within theidisk 9 isa head' l0 Vsecured to the shaft. 4 adjacent the end of the drum and the periphery ofthe head'is formed with nitches, adapted to receive-.the
spurs of dogs l1 secured to the drum whereby the drum may be locked against rotation.
A conduit 12 secured to the casing 1 enters the opposite endof the drum and" through the same the service wires 13' extend to stationary disks 14, 14, vwhich are insulated from each other and disposed upon the end of the conduit' 12, in contact with the rotary Paten-tea Nov. a, i915.V

carries a pulley 19 'over which 4the -service wires pass.
center, orthe lightcan be projected horizontally toward or away from said-bracket ,fthe of the light is effected raising and lowering through rotation of the drum 3; What is claimed is :-y
r' The construction of the bracket" -17 and arm 13 are suchthat the light can be Vmoved vin a circleabout the bracket 16 as a In a drop'light in combination a c asing having lan orifice terminatingannan upturned ange, a bracket secured'to said casing, a rotary partitioned drum within said casing and supported at one end by said bracket, a hollow disk secured to said drum,
anotherjbracket 4secured to said casing, a
'stationary shaft 'connecting said last named bracket andv the partition in said rotary drum and forming a bearing for the last named member'and for the said hollow disk,
a 'spring connecting said shaftand said hollow disk, a circular niched-head within said hollow disk fast upon said. stationary shaft, dogs carried by said drum in the plane of said'circular head and adapted for releasable locking engagement with .the niched pevcasing, stationary disks terminally carried by said conduit and insulated' from each other, rotary brushes carried by said drum and engaged 4by said disks, service wires eX- tending through said conduit to said disks,
service wires connected to said brushes andl A wound about said f drum and projected through the said orifice in the casing, a
ibracket pivotally carried by the upturned iiange of said orifice and a telescoping arm provided with aservlce wire support carried by said bracket. f
In testimony thatl claim the -foregoing as my own I have Ahereto aflixedmy signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. JOI-IN I. STEEN. Witnesses:
' C. F. MOORE, GABE STONE.
