To all wit m it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY J. SMITH, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Lakewood, in the county of 'Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sand-Supporting Devices for Molding-Flasks,of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a sand supporting device for molding flasks in which sand molds are produced and more particularly to a flask of this character provided with means which are mounted on the walls of the mold and support the sand between these walls-so as to prevent breakage of the sand mold during the operation of the mold and pattern.
It is the object of this invention to pro.- duce a sand supporting device of this character which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in construction, which can be readily adjusted to suit different forms of patterns, which has a comparatively large holding surface, and which is less exposed to the destructive action of the gases generated during the castingoperation than the .devices of this character heretofore in use. i
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of a molding flask equipped with my improved sand supporting device. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section thereof taken in line 33, Fig. 1 but showing the pattern on the mold board omitted.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several vlews.
My improved sand supporting device is provided on its upper side within the flask with one or more patterns 4 so that upon filling the space within the flask and abovethe pattern board with sand and then separating the flask from the board an impression of the pattern will be left on the underside of the sand, in the usual and well known manner.

At different points throughout the length of each supporting bar the same may be provided with laterally. projecting. loops or sockets 8v which open vertically and each of which is [adaptedto receive a nail 9, as shown in Figs. 1. and 3, or the like, which nails are preferably inserted Vertically or substantially so in these loops with their heads'at the lower ends thereof so that they form a plurality of anchors which are embedded in the sandas thesame isfilledinto the flask and operate to support this sand and prevent breakage of the mold when the flask and pattern board are separated.
The supporting bar is preferably constructed of sheet steel or similar metal and the loops are preferably formed by displacing a portion of the metal stock of this bar 1 laterally at intervals out of the same to such an extent as will form the loops and leave vertical openings or sockets into each of which an anchoring nail is adapted to be inserted or driven and held frictionally therein by the resilience of the loop, bar and the nail. Owing to this resilience each of the nails may be adjusted vertically in its particular loop tosuit the position of that part of the sand mold which it is intended to support and the same may also be tipped in .adirection lengthwise of the bar and held frictionally in this position to suit any peculiarities of the pattern from which a sand mold is being made. The nail supporting loops are preferably constructed in the form of two longitudinal rows on'opposite sides of the supporting bar and the loops on one side of the bar alternate with the loops on the other side so that the several loops form a staggered arrangement of the same as a whole. By this means the supporting eflect ofthe two rows of nails which are mounted on each bar is spread overa greater area than would be the case if the nails were all arranged on the same line, thereby increasing the efliciency of this sand supporting device without increasing its cost.
Inasmuch as the lower edge of the supporting bar is continuous from one end of the same to the other the sand of the mold fits closely against this part of the bar and reduces to a minimum the possibility of any of the gases generated during the casting operation from passing upwardly along the supporting bar and reaching the supporting loops which carry the nails, thereby reducing the tendency of these gases to destroy these nail supporting loops and prolonging the life of the sand support accordingly.
My improved sand supporting device for molding flasks is exceedingly simple inconstruction, the same is very ellicient in operation and can be readily adjusted to various kinds of patterns and it can be produced at comparatively low cost.
I claim as my invention:
1. A sand supporting device for molding flasks comprising a single bar having nail loops projecting laterally from the side thereof at a distance from the upper and lower edges of the bar. r
( 2. A sand supporting device for molding flasks comprising a single bar having nail loops projecting laterally from the side thereof at a distance from the upper and lower edges of the bar and the inner sides of said loops being arranged at a distance from the adjacent side; of the bar.
3. A sand. supporting device for molding flasks comprising a single bar having nail loops projecting laterally from the side thereof at a distance from the upper and lower edges of the bar, the lower edge of said bar being continuous or unbroken, and the inner sides of said loops being arranged at a distance from. the adjacent. side of the bar.
d. A sand supporting device for molding flasks comprising a bar provided on its opposite sides with rows of laterally projecting loops, which arebent out of the stock of the bar and each of whichis adapted to receive an upright nail.
5. A sand supporting, device for molding flasks. comprising, a: bar provided on its opposite sides with rows of laterally projecting loops which are. bent out of. the stock of the bar and each of which. is adaotedto receive an upright. nail, the loops on one side of the bar being, arranged to alternate with those on the, other side of the same. for producing a staggered arrangement of these loops.
