Description

M. MORRIS. LOCK.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. I. 1915.

LOCK."
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, MILTON MORRIS,- a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to locks, and the object of the invention is to provide means which not only enter into the keeper plate, but are capable of actually engaging the same so that said plate cannot be pried away from the face plate of the look.
In the accompanying drawings which show an embodiment of the invention Figure 1 is an elevation showing the outer end of the lock. Figs. 2 and 3 are side elevations, partly in section, showing the movable parts in difi'erent position, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the toothed segmental auxiliary locking elements.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the form selected to illustrate the invention, the lock casing 1 is provided with a face plate 2, said face plate having a rectangular bolt opening 3 therein as usual, and cooperating in the usual manner, with the keeper plate 4, which has a rectangular opening 5 for receivingthe bolt.
7 My invention contemplates any kind of mechanism for moving the bolt 6. In the form illustrated said bolt is guided by a post 7 projecting into a longitudinal slot 8 in the bolt. The lug 9 also serves to guide said bolt and the inward'movement of the latter is limited by a stop 10*. The bolt is operated by a rotary arm 10 operated by any suitable key mechanism. In the particular form of lock shown, a dog 11 is mounted upon the bolt and pivoted upon the pintle 12 projecting from said bolt. This dog has a lug 13 which is adapted to abut the front and rear ends of post 7 to. lock the bolt in retracted and projected position. Said dog is urged" toward said post by a spring 14 and is lifted into and out of engagement with the post 7 by the arm 10 which engages the finger 15 formed at the inner end of the dog.
So far as the parts have been thus far described they are old and may be greatly varied without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Specification of Letters Patent.
1 plate.
I will now describe the parts which more particularly distinguish my look from others.
The bolt is provided with rack teeth 18 which engage teeth 19 on the auxiliary locking'elements 20. Said locking elements aresegmental and have circular edges 21 at the back which slide upon the edges of the opening in the face plate 2'. The result is that when the parts are projected from the normal position shown in Fig. 2, said auxiliary locking elements will swing laterally as they moveforward and will engage the inside of the keeper plate 4 as shown in Fig. 3. In other words, the parts 20 swing both out ward and forward and engage the inner edge of the keeperplate at the opening 5 therein in such manner as to prevent the keeper from being pried away from the face Consequently there is no possible way of opening the door by forcing a jimmy between the face plate and the keeper plate except by actually breaking the parts, and
it will-be noted that in my device the locking parts are full size and of rugged con Patented Nov. 2, 1915.
Application filed February 1, 1915. Serial N 0L 5,350.v I i struction, and hence afford little orv no danger of being broken. V
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters'Patent, is
1. A'lock having a casing, a bolt sliding rectilinearly in said casing, said bolt having gear teeth along the edge, and a curved toothed rack forming an auxiliary locking element and making rolling contact with said bolt.
2. A look having a casing provided with a face plate having an opening, therein, a
bolt sliding in a straight line through said opening and having gear teeth arranged along the edge, and asegmental rack meshing with the teeth on the bolt and held in mesh by the adjacent edge of the face plate.
3. A look having a casing provided with a face plate having an opening therein, a
bolt sliding in a straight line through said opening and having gear teeth along the edge, and a toothed rack also sliding through said opening and meshing with the teeth on the bolt, said rack being curved and having its rear curved edge making sliding contact with the adjacent edge of the face plate, whereby the curved rack is held. in
mesh by the face plate and said rack makes, ing them in engagement with the straight 10 rolling contact with the bolt. rack. V
4. A look having a casing provided with a In Witness whereof, I have hereunto subface plate having an opening therein, a scribed my name in the presence of two witdouble edged straight rack, and two curved nesses.
racks meshing therewith in opposite sides MILTON MORRIS. thereof, said straight rack constituting a WVitnesses:
bolt and sliding in a straight line, the face SAMUEL SC-HWEITZER,
plate backing up the curved racks and hold HOWARD M. COX.
