DUMPING-VVAGON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2, Mild.
Application filed July 113, 1914. Serial No. 850,739.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, GEORGE a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Butler and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping- VVagons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings- This invention relates to new and useful improvements in dumping wagons, and particularly to that class in which the material carried in the box is dumped through swinging doors at the bottom of the box.
An object of this invention is the provision of improved means for opening and closing the doors at the bottom of the wagon box, whereby both doors are operated simultaneously when it is desired to open or close the same.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a dumping wagon which ineludes a wagon box, to the bottom of which a pair of doors are swingingly connected, means being provided to check the downward and outward swing of the doors to prevent the same from striking the wheels of the wagon and to prevent the load which is dumped, from spreading beyond the wheels of the same.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed,
and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure l is a top plan view of a wa on showing my improved doors and operating mechanism connected thereto; Fig. 2 is a side elevational view thereof; Fig. 3 is a rear end view; Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line l-4t of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary bottom view of one end of one of the doors.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the body of the wagon which is provided with a wagon box for receiving a load, the box comprising the sides 2, front wall 3, and rear wall 4, and having an openbottom which is closed by the swinging doors 5. Connected to the outer face of each side 2 of the box are pairs of straps 6, the straps 6 of each pair,
heingconnected toeach side adjacent its forward end, and another pair being connected to each side adjacent its rear end. Arranged within each pair of straps is a keeper or guide bar 7, the opposite ends of the keepers being offset inwardly and secured to the sides of the box between the straps (3, and the lower end of each keeper terminating near the lower end of the box. It will be observed that the keeper or guide bar 7 affords vertically disposed elongated loop members. Secured to the outer face of each door are pairs of transversely extending straps 8, the pairs of straps being spaced apart to substantially the same distance as the straps (i secured to the sides of the box, the outer ends of the straps 8 being disposed angular-1y as at 9 to engage on opposite sides of the keepers 7 the extremities of the angularly disposed ends of each pair of straps 8 being connected by a pin a carrying a roller 10 which engages between the inner face of one of the keepers 7 and the straps 6 on the sides of the box.
Rotatably mounted in suitable supports 11 on the body, forwardly of the box, is a winding shaft or drum 12, the shaft having .a ratchet wheel 13 keyed on one end thereof, and loosely mounted on the shaft adjacent the wheel 13, is an operating handle 14, the handle carrying a slidable pawl 15 to engage the teeth of the ratchet wheel 13 so that upon rotation of the handle in one direction, the shaft is rotated. Connected to suitable hooks 16 which are secured to the rear end of the box adjacent its upper edge, are the rear ends of a pair of door closin chains K 17, the chains extending downward'y to engage against pulleys 18 which are rotatably supported upon the rear end 4 of the box, adjacent its lower edge. Rotatably mounted in a yoke connected to each door at its inner edge and adjacent the rear endthereof. is a roller 19, a pair of similar rollers being rotatably mounted in yokes secured to the under face of each door adjacent its inner edge and disposed centrally of its ends, another roller 21. being rotatably mounted in a yoke connected to the under face ofeeach door adjacent its forward end.
The chains 17 are passed under the rollers 19 at the rear ends of the doors and thence over the rollers 20 intermediate of the ends of the doors, and then under the rollers 21 connected to the forward ends of the doors, the chains being then passed upwardly along the front wall 3 of the box, the chains till? iti till

ltltl ltlli lltl which is mounted upon the body forwardly of the box. 1
The doors 5 are normally maintained in closed position by operating the handle 14 connected-to the shaft 12 with the pawl 15 engaged with the teeth of the ratchet wheel 13 so that the forward ends of the chains 17 are wound upon the drum until the doors are entirely closed, the doors being held in their closed positions by means of a pivoted pawl which is'carried by the body of the wagon. It will be seen that when it is desired to open thedoors 5 of the box, the pawl 15 is merely disengaged from the teeth of the ratchet wheel 13, thereby allowing the doors to be opened by their, own weight and the weight of the load interposed thereupon, the doors when opening, unwinding the forward ends of the chains 17 from the drum. The rear ends of, the chains 17 "are prevented from swinging side to side when the doors are opened by reason of the pulat their inner edges will cause the outer edges of the doors to rise, owing to the engagement of the rollers 10 withthe guide bars 7, which checks the outward swing of the doors, so that the same will be prevented from striking the wheels of the wagon.
Upon further pressure of the load upon the doors, the same will be moved downwardly with the rollers 10 engaged against the straps 6 connected to the outer faces of the sides of the box. \Vhen the drum 12 is rotated to wind the forward ends of the chains thereupon to close the doors, the engagement of the chains against the rollers 19 and 21 carried upon the opposite ends of the doors will draw the meeting edges of the doors upwardly to tightly close the doors to receive another load.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is In a dumping wagon, the combination with a box and a movable bottom therefor, a vertically disposed pair of spaced and parallel straps carried by each side of the box, a vertically disposed elongated keeper carried by each side of the box having its extremities secured to the box between the straps, angularly disposed members carried by the bottom and arranged in pairs, the members of each pair being disposed at opposite sides of a keeper, a pin connecting the free extremities of each pair of members and disposed through the adjacent keeper, and a roller carried by said pin between the members and contacting with the keeper and the straps.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W. SHARTLE.
