I residing at. lifilciiees Rocks, in the; county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have Leeann roe TU ING-amen ties.
To. all whom it may concern; I
Be it known that I, Ronnn'r L.,SHANNON, a. citizen of the United'Stat'es of'America,
: invented certain new and useful Improve I ments in Guardsfor Turiiing ltiachines,of, which the following is a specificatiom'refer once being hadtherein to the accompanying drawing. w This invention relates to 'a guard for turning machines and'has forfits object to provide a device of such class, in a manner as hereinafter setfforth, for protecting the operator from the cuttings during the 0P: eration of the turning tool. I Further objects. of the inventionare; to provide a turning tool, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, efficient and convenient in its use, readily set up with respect to the tool, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specificallydescribed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come withinthe scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts ssthroughout the several views Figure l is a front elevation of a guard in accordance with this invention showing the adaptation thereof in connection with the tool carrier and work. Fig 2 is a sectional plan of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view, on line l. 1-, of Fig.1 and on a smaller scale. I I
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 denotes the work, as illustrated a wheel, upon a support 5 and arranged in proximity to the work is a toolcarrier consisting of an upright, 6 having projecting therefrom an upper pair of clamping bolts 7 and a lower pair of clamping bolts 8. I
Mounted upon the bolts 7 and 8 are washers 9 and nuts 10." v ,The, reference characters 11 and 12 denote a pair of clamping bars which at their tops positioning of the cross head27, to be here- Patented Get. is, rare;
a icatio filedMay 6, 19141. serimn e3erea bars 11 and 12 are adapted to be mounted upon the bolts 8, the slots 14; providing for such purpose and are also mounted upon the bolts 7 the slots13 providing for such purpo e a I The tool, which is" indicated at. 15, is.
mounted below the bolts. 7 and. above the,
bolts 8 or uponthe bolts8 and the tool 15 is maintained in pcsitionbythe bars Hand 12, which in. connectionwith thewashers9 and nuts 10' clamp the tool 15 against the uprightfi. i p 1 Each f the bars 11, '12 has its upperin ner corner beveled as at'lri to, facilitate. the
inafter referred to, when coupling the guard 18. to be hereinafter referred to, in position with respect to the tool.
Associated with and capable of being cletachably coupled with the bars 11 and 12, is f with respect to the bars 11 and 12. One end of the arm 17 is provided with a vertically disposed hollow semi-cylindrical guard 18, thelatter being closed at its top and open at its bottom and cut away as at 1 9 to provide a clearance for the flange 20 of the work. The guard 18 and arm 17 is reinforced through the medium of a pair of spaced straps21, which is fixedly secured to the outer face of the arm, 17 and to the outer face of the guard 18. Connected to the arm 17. between the straps 21 is a handle 22.
Fixedly connected to the. straps 21 and extending at right angles with respect thereto is a vertically disposed bar 23, bifurcated at its upper and lower ends as at 21 andpiva guard support andwhich consists of an otally connected in each of said bifurcated" ends as at 25, is a link 26 having its inner end provided with a cross head 27. The
' cross heads 27 are adapted to be forced against the inner corners of the bars 11 and 12 whereby the guard support will be detachably connected in position so that the cross heads 27 and bars. 11 and 12, is such to prevent the shifting of the cross heads 27 under normal conditions and is furthermore such to maintain the guard support in position under normal conditions. When the cross-heads27 are shifted to the position shown in Fig. 8, they will not, under normal conditions; drop downward and set up clamping action. 7 v V 7 Copies o fv this patent may "he obta inedjiorf it 'What I c1aim'is:' e
