Specification of Letters Patent.

.Applicationfiled Noverribero1.0,r 1914;. Serial No. 871,372.
To all whom it may concer/ii:
`'Be it known that I, HARRY A; Tnusoorn` a citizen of the United States, residing at lVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented new and useful Improvements inlarcel-Post Envelope, of which the following isy a specification. op
rlhis invention relates to improvements ,4 rin envelops, andparticularly to anenvelop which, while like or sii'nilar to theV envelop in general use, includes or is provided with means for attaching it' to a parcel post package in accordance with establisl'ied` regulations. y n
The primary object of the invention is to provide anenvelop having anexte'nsion beyond the body. theieoffand forming a portion of the blank from whichthe en-y velop is made, which extension isinanifoldable into a plurality of pliesforpassageof a fastening, `and thereby forming a tag whereby the fastening element may besecui'ed to the envelop in a firm and secure manner and without liability of the envelop tearing under strain.` A y y l A further object of the invention isto provide an envelop havingla inanifoldable extension which may forin a connection between the envelop body and'sealing flap,
yllhe invention consists of the features ofk construction, combination and arrangement.
of parts herein fully described and claimed,
reference being had tothe accompanying drawing in whichz- M Y l*1 igure 1 is a bach View of one form of envelop embodying` my invention, Figs.
and 3 are sections on the lines 2 -2 and 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4; isa plan viewof the envelop blank. Fig. 5 is a back yview of a slightly ymodified form yof envelop.` Fig. 6 is: a similar view of another modifiedr form ofr envelop. Fig. 7 is` a'section on line 7 7 ofFigG. 'i Referring toFigs. 1 to 4 inclusive, of the drawing, 1 `designates the body or poclreted portion of an envelop formed by .a front wall 2, end flaps 3 and bottom flap 4, which flaps are turned over upon the back of the front wall 2 and suitably united. The envelop is provided with the usual `sealing Vflap 5, which, however, instead of being directly attached to the wall 2, as is usual in the ordinary form of envelope, is connected with said front wall by an extension 6, integral with the blank of which the body of the envelop is formed. The said eXtension 6 is coeXtensive in width with the body or pocket 1 of the envelop, Vbut in thek illusktration here given of substantially twice its depth, kand includes bottom and top sections 47 and 8 foldable along a median line 9. es shown, the bottom section 7 is intey, gral with the front wall 2, the top section 8 integralr with the said bottom section 7 and the sealing iiap 5 integral with the top section 8. The extension 6 is provided with the diagonally arranged Vfold or crease lines 10, extending across said `extension 6, between the corner portions thereof and crossed or intersecting at an intermediate 'point in the length of the fold line 9, and
said extension 6 is also provided'with vertically arranged fold or crease lines 11 and horizontal transverse fold or crease `lines V12 which intersect in the form of an appioxiniately square figure near the center of the extension G. The foldlines 11 eX-.i tend between and intersect the fold lines 12 atpoints equidistantlv above and below the fold'line 9 and on opposite sides of thecenter of said line, while the fold lines 12r intersectand connect the upper and lowerends of the said fold linesV 11. Thesections 7 and 8 of the extension G may be provided with inturned flaps or flanges 13 and lt dek'signed if desirable, to bey gumrned or pasted to each other, or to sectionsy 7 or Swhen the Aenvelop is closed and sealed towconnect` and reinforce the said sections 7 and 8, and, if desired, the flaps or anges l: may be provided with'eXtensions 15` adaptedy to be gunimed or pasted to the back of the frontA wall 2 ofthe body 1 orfinfolded with portions of the body, to givegreater security ragainst tearing at the corners of the envelop yfrom :an unusual strain ontlie tag portion lor against unauthorized attempts to open the sealed envelop.
Ink the VInanufacturelof the tag portion of f the envelop, the sectionS'of the extension y6 is folded along the line 9fdowniiponrthe ,section 7, whereby the sealing flapr 5 is brought into position for use, being gumined and ready to be pasted to the back of the body 1 to close and seal the pocket. The extension 6, after being thus folded upon itself is then folded along the registering diagonal crease lines 10 so as to provide double triangular infolds 16 which extend over uponV the folded section 8, and then the upper or apex portion 17 of the triangular` flap or tag thus produced is folded down either directly to a binderv cord passed aroundfthe package or'to a cord or fastenlage on sealing flap 5 is moistened and the fiap pasted down to Vclose andseal the pocket ing wire designed to engage the. binder co-rd.
.In the use of the envelop the matter to be contained andinolosed is lfirst inserted in the bodyior pocket l after which the muoias in the ordinary envelop.
It willgbe observed from the foregoing construction that the envelop will not only be securely sealed, 'but that the extension Whenimultifolded in the prescribed manner ywill provide a pluralityV of plies for the passage of the fastening member 18, by whichv a tag or fastening portion of maxi-V Y mum strength and durability is produced.
As the eyelet passes through the large numberof folds of the paper, it will be apparent ythat it has a strong, durable and rigid con-r nection with the envelop, so that liability of y the tearing away of the envelop or of the kfastening connection from the envelop will be reduced to the minimum.
. It will, of course, be understood that the multifold tag may be formed in other ways y than that above disclosed, and that the portions may beV united vby any suitable lfast'eningmeans.
v In Fig. 5 I haveshown a slightlyfmodi-i,
fied formof construction in which the tag is arranged at one .end instead of at the too 0f` the envelop body, the general construction being otherwise the same. understood, Vof course, that the sealing flap or the tag,'may.be disposed at eitherend o-f the envelop body, or atV the bottom or top,
' at will. I therefore do not connemyself,
in this particular, to the constructions and arrangements disclosed.
In the modified form'of my invention shown in F igs.; 6 and 7, the construction is substantiallythe same as that disclosed in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, except that the apex:y 17 a of the triangular top fold 17 is tucked l under the portion 16 and united with the Copies of this patent 'may ne obtained fornve cents each, fby addressing It is to be remainder of the folds by the eyelet 18, thus further increasing the strength of construction. The foldextension 17a may be a part vof the fold itself made by cutting on lines y11--11 and upper 12, or may be simply the point of the fold comprising the portion about one third of the way down from apex `to base; and lmay be tucked under or laid Ving gummed faces, said extensionl being doubled so as to dispose the flap in sealing position, and then folded from ropposite sides on diagonal lines Yto provide portions, each composed of a plurality of thicknesses of material, and having said po-rtions Ydisposed in lapping arrangement, and fastening means ,passing through said lapping portions'yand uniting the same, said means beingvadapted for the passage of a fastening cord or tho-ng, and said gummed flanges being adapted for attachment to each other 'or to the plies of the extension and to have their extensions secured within the envelop body.l Y Y 2. An envelop comprisingfa body portion having a sealingv flap, and a vsubstantially rectangular extension between said body portion and said flap, said extension beingv doubled by folding it on a line parallel with the body portion and so as to dispose the flap in sealing position, and thenvfolded from opposite sides "on diagonal lines to provide portions, eachvcomposed of a r.plurality of thicknesses of material, and having said portions disposed in lapping arrangement, and fastening means passing through saidlapping portions and uniting thesame, said means beingadapted for the passage of a fasteningcord or thong. In'testimony whereof I affix my in presence of two witnesses. f HARRY A. TRUSCOTT.`
