into the surrounding earth of substantially liquid matter.
My invention is hereinafter described and the features of novelty specifically pointed out.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views and in which- I Figure 1 shows a cesspool embodying the invention, the view showing a vertical section through one of the diameters; Fig. 2 shows a horizontal section of a portion of the wall; and Fig. 3 shows in perspective, one form of integral units of which the wall may be built.
In the drawing, 1 is a cesspool or similar separating container comprising a wall 2, this wall being preferably circular in cross section and of the desired diameter and height to produce a substantially cylindrical container of the capacity required. The wall 2 is provided with openings 3 leading from the inside to the outside of the wall, and as shown in the drawing, these openings are preferably arranged horizontally and in concentric lines. The openings 8 in practice will be filled with a granular filling 4 through which the liquid may percolate, but which will prevent the solids from passing through the wall. As specifically shown, the wall is built up of a plurality of integral cellular units which advantageously may be in the form of rectangular tiles 5 formed of a vitreous material baked or otherwise cured to secure hardness and durability, and preferably having an outer wall 6 with the in- Specification of Iietters Patent.
Serial No. 646,617.
tegral partitions 7 and 8. extending between the wall 6 at right angles to each other and forming the longitudinally extending cells 9. As shown in the drawing, these integral units are laid in tiers and in a circular form. After being built up to a sufiicient height and preferably upon a bed of sand 10, the outer surface of the .wall is surrounded by a packing of sand 11, which in the case of rectangular units, enters between adjacent integral units 5 forming wedge-shaped fillers 12, and sand is also packed within the cellular chambers 9 forming the filtering plugs 4. The granular filling plugs i are made of sand or similar material, and will be inclined at the inner ends of the cellular openings, the inclination extending from the bottom to the top substantially at an angle of forty-five degrees. The inner ends of the hollow tiles 5 in each horizontal tier are in contact and the triangular spaces between their outer diverging portions are filled with sand which forms an inward extension of the filtering'body 11 surrounding the tiles. In practice, it will be found that only a small portion of the inner ends of the filling plugs will become impregnated with the relatively solid matter, and in cleaning the cesspool, 1t is only necessary to remove a small portlon of the inner ends of the filling plugs and replace with new material.
As is usual in such constructions, the cesspool will have a suitable top or crown 13, and a man hole 14:, also a pipe 15 will lead into the cesspool and preferably through the crown 13. i
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patented Got. 5, 1915. e
