Be it known that I, WALTER A. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Govington, in the parish of St. Tammany and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Moldboards for Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same; I
The present invention relates to mold boards for plows, and consists more particularly in improvements in mold boards for plows of the broad type employing roller attachments known to the art generally as roller mold boards.
It is a primary object of the present invention to provide a mold board for plows which will be constructed to receive a roller arranged to project above the working surface of the mold board and to come into active contact with the soil so as to reduce the friction thereof upon the mold board, and thereby correspondingly reduce the draft of the plow.
Another object of the present invention resides in providing a roller mold board for ing over the soil to a considerably greater" distance than has been accomplished hereto-- fore in other types of mold boards, to the end of securing positive breaking up and pulverizing of the earth.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a mold board for plows which will be constructed with a substantially central opening therein, and in which is arranged to be journaled a roller attachment, and the opening is designed to permit access of air to the Working face of the mold board, and to relieve the partial vacuum created during the plowing operation; whichresults in adherence of the soil to the same and greatly increases the draft and further induces clogging of the mold board and associated parts. 7

invention to provide a mold board for plows 1 mold board constructed to be applied to any of the present approved forms of plows; and I the same is designed to comprise few and simple parts which will be economical of manufacture, and can be readily assembled and mounted upon the plow in any usual manner. 1
With the foregoing, and other objects in view, the invention consistsof such details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts, as willbe hereinout in the appended claim.
Reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference symbols indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the plow provided with amoldboard constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in vertical section of'a mold board and roller constructed in accordance with the present invention; and Fig. 3 is a substantially horizontal sectional view of a mold board illustrating my improved attachment in elevation.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the usual draft beam mounted on the plow stock 2 and connected with the handles 3; the same constituting a frame, wherein the mold board 4 and plowshare 5 are mounted in accordance with any approved manner.

The roller 9 is preferably constructed solid, and of relatively large'and uniform diameter, and the same is provided with an, axial opening to accommodate the pintle 8, which latter may be threaded to receive a nut 10 for securing the same in position. Adjacent the opening 6, and on the landside at which the higher end of the opening is located, the mold board is bulged upwardly, as indicated at- 12, to constitute a barrier for preventing the entrance of soil to the roller bearing, which would have a tendency to fall by gravity and clog against the upper end of the roller and impede the free rotation thereof. The mold'board f is further stamped out to provide an integral lip or flange 11, pro jecting from the upper longitudinal edge of the opening 6, and the same is bent forwardly, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, and is shaped to agree substantially with the periphery of the roller 9. The outer free end of the lip 11 is arranged to lie in close proximity to the periphery of the roller 9, and at a point substantially above the working face of the mold board 4, and the same constitutes a scraper for removing accumulations of soil which would otherwise adhere to the surface of the roller and prevent free rotation thereof.
t will be understood from the foregoing that the opening 6 will admit air from the atmosphere which descends in the rear of the mold board, and will circulate through the opening 6 and about the working face of the mold board, whereby to relieve the partial vacuum created by the contact of the soil thereon. The roller 9, which is of relatively large and uniform diameter as above described, projects, as more clearly seen from an inspection of Fig. 2, to a considerable height above the surface of the mold board and forms therewith an abrupt revolving surface, into the path of which the soil will be forced as the plow proceeds, and the roller will act to throw the soil over to a considerably greater distance than that of mold boards as heretofore con structed. This action is attended by a break ing up and pulverizing of the soil to such a degree that subsequent harrowing is found to be unnecessary.
I have illustrated and described preferred and satisfactory constructions, but obviously changes could be made in the herein described apparatus which could be used without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim The combination with a plow, of a mold board therefor constructed of sheet metal bent to shape and stamped with a Central and diagonally disposed opening, said mold board being bulged outwardly at the upper end of said opening, a pair of perforated ears formed integral with said sheet metal mold board and stamped out in producing said opening, said ears being bent rearwardly, a roller provided with an axial opening, a pintle engaging through the opening in said roller and journaledin said perforated ears, and a lip formed from the metal of said mold board and stamped in producing said opening, said lip being bent upwardly and having its free end terminating in close proximity to said roller for constituting a scraper, substantially as described.
