Description

wrLuAM R. ALLEN.
improvement in Whip-Sockets.
Patented inne 6,1871.
Ormea.
WILLIAM- R. ALLEN, OF STOGKTON, NEW JERSEY.
IMPRVEMENT IN WHIP-SOCKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,556, dated June 6, 1ST
To uil whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. ALLEN, of Stockton, in the county of Hunterdon and State of N ew Jersey,;have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Whip-Sockets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of the same, and in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved whip-socket, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal central section thereof.
Like parts in the two iigures are designated by like letters.
This invention relates to an improved whipsocket; and consists of a barrel or hollow cylindrical casing, supplied on its inner circumference with a flange or semicircular projection and on its outer circumference with a conically-shaped receptacle or case,'within the lower or enlarged extremity of which is secured, by bolts or screws, an ordinary lock, the bolt of which comes in direct contact with the whip-handle when thrown out of the lock, which bolt, with the semicircular ange of the cylindrical casing, locks the whip within said casing, substantially as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
To enable those skilled in the art to which.
my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the annexed drawing, A designates a cylindrical casing or barrel, which is supplied with suitable means or clips a a, for attaching it to the vehicle. Within the upper end' or mouth of the casing Av is secured, in any known way, a rubber ring, al, to prevent the handle of the whip, inserted in said casing or be seen that in attempting to draw the whip from the socket its head will be obstructed on one side of said flange when the bolt of the lock is thrown out. B designates a conicallyshaped casing, which is attached to the outer circumference of the socket A, as shown particularly in Fig. 1, by any suitable means, the object of so constructing the said casing being to prevent water, produced by rain and snow, from entering the same and the lock placed therein, thereby preserving the lock from rust; as it will be seen that by means of the inclined surface of the said case the water, as soon as it touches it, will be carried oft' therefrom. To the lower or enlarged extremity of the casing B is attached, by means of solder or otherwise, a receptacle or case the inclined sides of which form a continuation of the former casing, and within which receptacle is secured, by means of screws or bolts, an ordinary lock, C, the forward end of which is made to enter an opening in the casing or socket A; and the bolts thereof, it will be observed by reference to Fig. 2, when thrown out by its key c, brought in contact or in close proximity with the handle of the whip D, by means of which and they 'ange a? of the casing or socket A the said whip will be so secured in said socket as to be prevented from being withdrawn therefrom unless the bolt of the lock be thrown in or relieved from contact with the whip-handle, which can only be done by the one carrying the key.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The whip-socket, supplied with the conically-shaped case having a lock and the semicircular flange or projection, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the pur pose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have hereunto signed my name this 22d day of February, A. D. 1871, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM R. ALLEN.
