DERRICK APPARATUS.
To all whom, it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS B. WALsToN,
a citizen of the'United States, residing at lVilliamsport, in the county of Pickaway and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Derrick Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specifica-v tion.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in derrick apparatus and consists of a simple and efficient apparatus of this nature so arranged that it may be easilytaken apart and reduced to a compact form when not in use and one which will be adapted for various uses for which apparatus of this nature may be desired.
The invention consists of various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the derrick made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of a base or socket member in which the lower spherical end of the boom has a bearing, the standard which engages the base being shown in section.
Reference now being had to thedetails of the drawings by numeral, 1 designates a standard which in the drawings is shown as being made of square tube iron and its lower end, which is shown in cross section in Fig. 3, passes through a square outlined opening 2 formed in the base plate 3 which is adapted to be held stationary in any suitable manner as by passing fastening means through the perforations 4:. Braces 1, made of angle iron or other material, are held securely fastened at their upper ends to the standard by means of bolts 1 and their lower ends are bolted or otherwise secured to angle plates 1 which areheld in fixed positions by means of anchor bolts 1'. In Fig. 1 of the drawings, I have shown the base plate as being held by means of bolts 5 which are Specification of Letters Patent.

passedthrough the plate 3 and embedded in concrete 6. Integral with said plate is a cup-shaped flaring bearing member 7 which has a concaved bottom and in which the spherical end 8 at the lower end of the boom 9 has a universal bearing. The said boom has laterally extending hangers 1O fastened thereto in which the shaft 11 is journaled and which carries a drum 12, said shaft being provided with a suitable handle 13. A pulley, designated by numeral 14, is mounted upon an axis 15 supported by the hanger 16 which has an eye 17 engaging the U- shaped clevis 18, the arms of which are apertured for the reception of the pin 19 passed;
through the boom near its upper end. A cable 20 is fastened to and adapted to wind about the reel or drum 12 and passes over the pulley 1% and has a hook 21 at one end. A second clevisshaped member, designated by numeral 22, has apertured ends mounted upon the pivot 19 and is engaged by a hook 23 having a forked end, the arms 24: of which are apertured for the reception of the pin 25 upon which the pulley 26 is journaled. A tackle block 27 is provided with arms 28 and 29, the former of which is apertured to receive one end of the cable 30 which is fastened thereto and said tackle carries a pivotal pin 31 upon which a pulley 32 is journaled. The cable 30 passes about the pulleys 26 and 32, and 33 designates a friction brake lever which is pivotally mounted upon a pin 34.- and its free end, which is concaved, is adapted to bear against the cable 30, holding the same frictionally against the pulley 32 when desired. Said brake lever 33 has an aperture 35 carrying a link 35' engaging a hook 36, the shank portion of which passes through the upper end of the standard and has a threaded end for the reception of the nut 37 to hold the same in place. A spacing member 37 is placed upon the shank portion of the hook 36 for the purpose of locating the swinging pivotal point between the link 35 and link 36, directly over the socket member 7.
By the provision of a derrick made in accordance with my invention, it will be noted that a simple and eflicient mechanism is afforded whereby the angle at which it is desired to have the boom held may be easily and quickly adjusted by simply releasing the friction lever 33 and lowering or raising the boom, the weight upon the same tending to securely hold the lever in frictional contact with the cable 30 while the derrick is oper ated in the usual manner. By the universal joint connection intermediate the lower spherical end of the boom with the cupshaped socket member, the boom may be swung conveniently to various positions.
What I claim to be new is A derrick apparatus comprising an apertured plate adapted to be fastened to a fixed object and provided with a socket member projecting above the same, a derrick post passing through the aperture of the plate, a boom haying universal bearing in said socket member, and tackle block and cable connections between the boom and post.
