i CABLE-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 21 1915.
Application filed August 19, 1913. Sofia-1N0. 785,503.
To all whom it may concern Be 1t known that I, J osnPH -K'ENNEDY, a
citizen of the United States of America,
and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cable-Hangers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
This invention relates to an improvement in cable hangers for suspending cables such as telephone or telegraph cables from a supporting messenger wire, and its object is to provide a simple and inexpensive device for this purpose and to improve upon such devices as have heretofore been known.
I will describe my invention in the following specification and point out the nove1 features thereof in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of one embodiment of the invention in open position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of this form of the hanger in closed or locked position. Fig. 4 shows the device in side elevation while Fig. 5 is a plan view of it. Fig. 6 is a front elevation of a modified form of hanger in locked position. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of this modified form also showing it closed and locked. Fig. 8 is a plan view of the modification shown in Figs. 6 and 7 before the T-shaped tongue is bent down to lock the clamp.
As illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive the hanger 10 is formed of a sheet metal strip and comprises an upper portion or hooked end 12 which is adapted to be hooked over and rest upon a wire 14, called a messenger wire, strung between the poles of a telegraph or telephone line. The hooked end is preferably formed to grip the messenger wire so that its position is rigidly fixed thereon. The lower portion 16 of the clamp is enlarged to adapt it to partially surround a cable 18. The part 20 of the body of the clamp is extended upward and provided with a U-shaped slot 22 which is adapted to receive a tongue 24 extending later-ally from the upper portion 12 of the clamp. The tongue 24 is formed with wings 26 so that the transverse cross-section of the tongue is U-shaped and adapted to enter the U-shaped slot 22. The tongue 24 is tapered toward its outer end to facilitate its entry into the slot 22, and the inner extremities of thewings 26 are flared toexceed the width of the slot 22, so that when the tongue isforced through the slot to lock the wings 26 have passed entirely through the band, whereupon they spring out and lock the band in place, thus securely fastening the hanger in position without the use of tools, and in such a manner as to be entirely free of danger of being jarred loose.
A modified form of locking device is shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8, in which the general shape of the clamp or hanger 30 may be the same as that described in the foregoing. The band 32 is provided with a rectangular slot 34 through which the head 36 of a flat T-shaped tongue 38 is adapted to pass. This tongue projects laterally from the upper hooked end 39 of the clamp.
In use the clamp is placed in position about the cable and messenger wire as previously described, then the head 36 of the tongue 38 is passed through the slot, and the portions 40 of said head which project beyond the shank of the tongue are bent down to form Wings which engage the band 32 to hold the clamp locked in position.
What I claim is:
1. A cable clamp, comprising a band adapted to partially surround a cable and provided with a U-shaped slot, and a hooked portion arranged to engage a wire, said hooked portion being provided with a laterally projecting tongue having wings arranged to be passed through said slot, said wings being adapted to spring outwardly and engage said band to lock the clamp in position.
2. A cable clamp, comprising a band adapted to partially surround a cable and spri ugout and form shoulders for engagement with saidband to lock the clamp in positioTi. r l v. 3. A cable clamp, comprisiifg fr. Imfid adapted topartially surround a cable end provided With a U-shaped slot,
hooked portion arranged to engage a Wire; said hooked portion beiiig fori'ridw'ith ii laterally projecting tapered tongue ;ha;v'irig; flaring Wings adapted to be passed through said slot, said Wings "being arranged to spring out and form shoulders for engagewhe e with said baud to lock the clamp in positi6n,-s"tid clamp when locked constitutingasingle continuous loop including With- 'i'fi'it'both the cable and the Wire.
