Be it known that I, ANTON A. GEHRLEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cylinder-Vats for PaperTMaking Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the. invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the -same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to paper making apparatus, and particularly to the cylinder-vat of, such apparatus, wherein the screen-cylinder operates to gather fiber from the liquid pulp.
The object of my invention is to provide means in the cylinder-vat whereby the flow of'the liquid pulp to the revolving screen, may be controlled throughout the length of the screen, and to provide means to regulate the even distribution of pulp-upon the surface of said screen-cylinder.
The features of my invention are hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which i Figure 1, is a sectional view of a cylindervat, on the line waa in Fig. 2, embodying my invention. Fig. 2, is a top or plan view of the same. Fig. 3, is a transverse section of the same, on the line yy in Figs. 1 and 2, looking in the direction of the arrow.
In these drawings, A, indicates the bottom; A and A the ends; and A and A*, the sides of a cylinder vat.
B and B, are out-flow boxes at the sides of the vat. 1
C, indicates a bridge-wall in spaced relation to the end A. r C, indicates a gate-head in the vat, in spaced relation to the bridge-wall C, which gate-head does not extend to the bottom A, of the vat, but leaves an inflow space between its lower end 0, and the bottom A,-through which the liquid pulp may flow to the screen-chamber.
' gates D,which are provided with operating screws (1, which pass through a transverse rail G at the top of the gate-head, and are provided with thumb nuts d, by means of which the gates D, D, &c., may each be adjusted as may be desired.
In the lower corner of the vat, formed by the joining of the bottom A, and the end wall A of the vat, I place a filler E, in which I hinge the lower endof an upright plate F, the upper end of which is provided with ears 7", f, in which screws G, G, are rotatably secured, the threaded portions of said screws operating in nuts G, secured on the end wall A Said screws are provided with hand-wheels H, or other suitable means for operating the same. This plate F, is preferably concaved through-- out its entire length, the curve thereof being most pronounced at its upper edge. The plate F is provided at its upper edge with a rail F, having a vertical front surface( Mounted in suitable bearings J J, upon the side walls A and A of the vat, upon the bottoms of vertical slots a, in said side walls, are the journals of the cylindrical-screen K, which is caused to revolve by the usual means; usually by means of a felt web pass ing over. a dandy-roll, not shown.
The said side-walls A and A are provided with outflow openings a, under the bearings J J, in addition to the slots a, (see Fig. 1.)
L, indicates a pulp-supply pipe, through A which liquid pulp is supplied to the apparatus, and L, indicates the out-flow pipe, by means of which the water, which has passed through the screen K, and openings a and a, into the out-flow boxes B and B, is conveyed away from the apparatus.
In operation pulp flows through the pipe L, into the chamber behind the bridge-wall C, and over the top of said bridge-wall, and under the gates D, into the screen chamber, partly filling the vat around the screen K, which is continuously revolving in the direction of the arrow; as the water in the pulp escapesthrough the screen cylinder into the interior thereof, a layer of fiber is deposited upon the outer surface, which is removed therefrom in the usual manner. If it is -found that at one point of the cylinder K,
as to hinder the flow of pulp into the screen chamber at that point. Again, when the pulp is thicker than at other times, the plate F, can be adjusted by the screws G G, so that the upper edge thereof will be nearer the cylinder K, which causes the thick pulp to become smoothly" distributed over the surface of the screen-cylinder K; while, if the pulp becomes thinner, owing to the presence of more water therein, the plate F, may be moved backward from the screen-cylinder K, bymeans of the screws G G.
It has been found by actual practice, that by means of my invention herein described, a paper-maker can, at all times control the quality of the paper as to uniform thickness throughout the width of the web, and-as to uniformity of surface.
Therefore, having fully shown and described my invention so as to enable others to utilize the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a cylinder-vat of a paper machine, the combination of a rotary screen mounted therein, of agate supporting-head at one side of said screen, a series of independently adjustable gates mounted upon said gate head, a vertical plate mounted in said vat at the opposite side of said screen, and means to move the upper edge of said plate toward and from said screen, substantially as described.
2. In a cylinder-vat of a paper machine, the combination of a rotary screen mounted within said vat, a vertical plate hinged in said vat near the bottom thereof having the upper edge thereof curved toward said screen-drum, and means to move the upper edge of said plate toward and away from said cylinder, substantially as described.
8. In a cylinder-vat, of a paper machine, the'combination of a rotary screen mounted within .said vat, a curved plate mounted wvithin said vat adjacent to the upwardly moving side of said screen, so that the upper edge of said plate will be nearer said screen thanany other portion of said plate, said plate having a narrow vertical surface at its upper edge, and screw mechanism adapted to position the upper edge of said plate with relation to said screen, substantially as set forth.
