SAMUEL KRAUS, 0F NEW YQRK, N. '55., ASSIGNOR 'IO EAGLE PENCIL COMPANY, NEW YORK, N. Y.
ERASER-TIP FUR LEAD-PENGILS.
Application filed April 17, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL KRAUs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in EraserTips for Lead-Penoils, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is an eraser tip for lead pencils and the like, composed of a stick of rubber or erasive material and an inclosing sheet metal sheath or sleeve, in which the stick of erasive material is readily, conveniently and quickly adjustable to protrude more or less of its end therefrom as desired; is held with certainty in its adjusted position by the same means which permit of its adjustment; and, for the purposes of adjustment, is manipulated from its sides, and'back of the extremity of the inclosing sheath, instead of being taken hold of by its protruding end for this purpose, thus saving this end (which is the end used for erasing purposes) from handling and consequent soiling. A device possessing these desirable characteristics is embodied in an eraser tip construction which I have devised, and which I shall now proceed 'to describe in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the eraser tip associated with a lead pencilthe stick of erasive rubber being represented as practically withdrawn within its inclosing sheet metal sheath Fig. 2 is a vertical axial section of the eraser tip and a portion of the lead pencil (in elevation) on line 22, Fig. 1, with the rubber, or erasive stick, adjusted so that its end will protrude beyond the sheath. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of the three parts of which the tip is composed, separated from one another.
The parts of which the eraser tip consists are a cylindrical sheet metal tube or sheath A; a cylindrical stick of erasive material B of shape and size to fit snugly inside the sheath; and a thin narrow sheet metal band or ferrule C to encircle and tightly clasp the base or rear end of the eraser stick, with which in effect it forms one, after having been thus applied. The sheet metal sheath A in this instance is mounted on the end of a lead pencil P, to which it is secured in the usual way, Throughout that portion-of its length which is designed to re ceive and ac- Speoification of Letters Patent.

commodate the eraser stick B it is screw threaded as at 1, the thread being line and of high pitch so that endwise pressure upon the body which it engages and is designed to hold, will not tend to cause that body to move lengthwise in the tube. There are also formed in the eraser tip sheath A, two preferably diametrically opposite longitudinal slots or openings 2, through which the eraser stick can be reached and taken between the fingers for the purpose of rotating it in the sleeve to secure the desired adjustment. The sheet metal ferrule or band C is a thin nar row band, screw threaded, as seen at 3, correspondingly with the screw threaded sheath A, within which it fits and with the screw thread 1 in which it engages. The ferrule C is tight upon the base or rear end of the rubber or eraser stick B. It need be of a width to contain say not more than two complete turns of the thread.
When the parts of the eraser tip are in the position shown in Fig. 1, the eraser stick B is practically completely housed within the sleeve or sheath A. To advance it from this position, all that is needed is to rotate the eraser stick in the proper direction until its end protrudes beyond the end of the sheath A to the proper extent, as indicated in Fig. 2, its manipulation for this purpose being readily effected through the side openings 2 in the sheath. In this way the eraser stick may be adjusted lengthwise in its sheath without handling its protruding end; while this end can also, whenever desired, be withdrawn entirely within its sheath so as to house it completely when not in use. Furthermore the pitch of the engaging screw threads 1, 3, on the sheath and ferrule is such that these threads in and of themselves, and without other instrumentalities, effectively serve to hold the eraser stick stable when under the end pressure and wobbly action to which it is subjected when used for rubbing purposes.
The length and width of the openings 2 in the sheath A may vary within limits without detracting from their usefulness, and the manipulation of the eraser stick can be effected through a single opening 2 only, if desired; but I prefer for convenience and certainty of manipulation the construction which embodies the two oppositely placed openings in the side of the sheath illustrated in the drawings.
' the same into practical effect; hat I claim herein as new and of my own invention, and
desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
