Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented se t. Ml, 11915.
1 Application filed November 7, 1914. Serial No. 870,724.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN ;E.-R1LLiNo a citizen of the United States,'and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of lVi'sconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mattresses, of which the following is a description, reference being had 'to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
The invention relates to mattresses.
The invention designs more particularly to provide a spring mattress made up of a plurality of sections. i
The invention further designs to provide a spring mattress made up 'of a plurality of sections and means for connecting adjacent sections together so as to form a. unitary structure.
Heretofore mattresses have been made of a plurality of sections and means have been provided for connecting adjacent sections together but these constructions are objectionable because, the sections acted independently and not as a unit. To obviate this difliculty means have been provided for not only connecting the adjacent'sections of the mattress together but also connecting the springs adjacent the edges of adjacent mattress sections together so that a unitary mattress construction Will result.
The invention further designs to provide a new and improved form of mattress con struction. V
The invention consists in the several fea-' tures hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by. claims at the conclusion hereof. 1
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the mattress embodyingthe invention; Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 44'of Fig. 2. i
The separatable mattress consistsof a plurality of mattress sections 5 and means for securing them together to produce a unitary mattress. Each of these sections comprise'a plurality of springs 6 whose intermediateconvolutions are straightened so that links 7 connecting adjacent springs will exert a straight pull upon the springs and the springs adjacent the outer edge of the section are connected intermediate their ends to a surrounding frame 8 having a reinforclngcross bar 9. Flexible coverings 10 are secured to the upper and lower portions of the springs 6 by. stitching 11 and an outer covering 12 surrounds each section.
The means for securing the mattress sections together comprises eyelets 13 inserted adjacent the edge 14 of adjacent mattress sections through which suitable lacing 15 is inserted to secure the mattress sections together. These eyelets 13 are inserted adjacent the edges 14 of the outer covering 12 passing through the upper and lower sides of said covering respectively and through an overlapped portion 16 of said cover and at tlie same time passing within the upper and The invention is not to be restricted to the details of construction herein set forth but may be varied so as to be within the scope of appended claims.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A separable mattress comprising a plurality of mattress sections, each of said sections comprising 'a plurality -of springs joined together and upper and lower flexible coverings secured to the upper'and lower portions of said springs, eyelets passing through said coverings and through the springs adjacent the side edges of each section, and means passing through the eyelets for securing adjacent sections together to producea unitary spring mattress.
A mattress comprising a plurality of separate mattress'sections, each of said sec- In testimony whereof, I afiix my signations comprising a plurality of springs and ture, in presence of two Witnesses. flexible coverings secured to said springs,
and means passing through said coverings JOHN E. BILLING. and through the springs adjacenfi the bottom and top edges of the sides of adjacent, sec- \Vitnesses:
tions to detachably connect said sections to- LOUIS O. FRENCH,
gether to produce a unitary spring mattress. EMILY SCHOWALTER.
