I Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 13, 1915.
Application filed May 4, 1914. Serial No. 836,365.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLns W. LENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carbondale, in the county of ackson, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in -Krout-Presses; and
I do hereby declare the following to'be a.
full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to presses and has special reference adapted for use in the preparation of krout.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved form of device of this description which is intended to be used in connection with an ordinary barrel or which may be used with a special barrel or receptacle, the device being of such character that varying degrees of pressure can be obtained for different heights of the contents of the barrel without the use of a pressure screw or the like.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like char acters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and
Figure 1 is a vertical section through a barrel showing the press applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of a barrel with the press applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a partial detail section taken horizontally just below the center of the cross bar, the view looking upward. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one end of the cross bar showing the adjusting means therefor.
In carrying out the objects of this invention as herein illustrated there is disclosed a barrel l0. Mounted within this barrel is a presser head 11, reinforcing strips 13 extending across said presser head. Piv
otally connected to these reinforcing strips is a rod 1 1, preferably rectangular in cross section, and provided on one side with a series of notches 15.
At 16 is a cross bar or lever provided with a handle portion 17 and on this cross bar or lever is a strap 18 through which the vertical member passes. Moreover to the underside of the cross bar is secured a plate 19 which is adapted to engage in the notches of the vertical member so. that when the lever is tilted slightly the strap engages the back of .the verticalmember while the plate is held securely in a respective notch.
To one end of this cross bar-is loosely pivoted a link 20 which is loosely pivoted as at 21 by its lower end to the barrel 10. A second link 22 is provided adjacent the other end of the lever and this second link 22 has provided in one edge a series of diagonal notches 23 which are adapted to engage a pin 23 carried adjacent the upper part of the barrel diametrically opposite the connection of the first mentioned linln In operation the krout is placed in the barrel in the usual manner and the plunger head dropped therein after the rod or stem has been fitted through the U-shaped member on the bar. When the plunger head has come to rest on the top of the krout the cross bar is raised until the plate on the under side thereof engages in one of the notches. The cross bar is then pulled down and one of the notches on the link adjacent the handle portion engaged with its pin. From time to time, as the krout compresses, the position of the vertical member and cross bar may be changed.
When it is desired to withdraw any of the krout the parts may be released and the plunger head simply turned up, the pivotal connection with. the vertical member permitting this motion so that more krout can be placed in the barrel or krout can be withdrawn therefrom.
There has thus been provided a simple and ehicient device of the kind described and of the character specified.
It will be obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of this invention without departing from the material principles thereof.
It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is desired to include all such as come properly within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
l. The combination with a receptacle, of a plunger mounted within said receptacle, a stem connected to said plunger and having a series of notches in one side, a cross bar constituting a lever and provided with a strap through which said stem passes, a lip on the nnder side of said cross bar adapted. to engage in a selected notch upon twisting the lever, a link pivotally connecting one end of the cross bar with the receptacle, and
a second link connected to said cross bar. U adjacent the oppositeend and adapted to I engage the receptacle.
2. An attachment for barrels comprising a cross plunger, a stem centrally pivotally connected to the cross plunger and'having a'series of notches on one side thereof, a
cross bar provided with va strap wherethrough said stem passes, a lip carried by Copies of this patent may be obtained for said cross bar and adapted to engage a notch in the stem as the cross bar is forced down, a link having pivotal connection with the cross bar and adapted for connection to a .barrel, and a second link having pivotal connection with said bar and adapted to five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. 0.-
