To ((15 whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES S. GATE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Easthampton, in the county of Hampshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful -improvements in (lop-Skewers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in skewers for bobbins such as are used in spinning machinery; and an object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character whereby the life thereof is greatly prolonged and whereby the possibility of breakage or slivering is substantially entirely eliminated.
Furthermore, it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character whereby the same is substantially incapable of rolling movement especially when dropped upon the floor.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved skewer for bobbins whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claims.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is an elevational view of my com plete device in an inverted position; Fig. 2 is a detail plan view of the spacing and connecting plate; Fig. 3 is a detail cross-sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. l; and Fig. e is a detail cross-sectional view on the line s'c4t of Fig. 1, looking in the opposite direction.
Referring more specifically to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 designates the steel wire members which are parallel throughout the greater portion of their length and suitably spaced and arranged in pairs, one pair being at right angles to the other pair, as will be clearly understood by referring to the drawing. members are directed inwardly toward one another, as shown at 2, and then secured together and tapered to a point, as shown at it will be understood that the outer ends of the steel wire members may besecured together in any suitable manner. The spaced steel wire members 1 are each directed outwardly at an angle, as shown Met, a spaced d stance from the'lower ends of said steel wire members and then again bent parallel to one another, as shown at 5, and extending through the opening 6 provided therefor in the arms of the spacing and connecting plate 7 which preferably has its central portion cut away, as shown at 8, to reduce the weight of the plate without materially decreasing the strength of the same. As is believed to be clearly obvious to thoseskilled in the art to which my present invention appertains, a bobbin is adapted to engage the extremities of the arms of the plate 7. After being extended through the openings 6, each steel wire member is bent inwardly at right angles, as shown at 9,'for a short distance and then directed downwardly at an angle, as shown at 10, the extremities of the downwardly directed ends being connected to form the lower point 11 of the bobbin skewer. As is believed to be self-evident, the tip or point 11 will rest in a conventional cup or socket on the bearing rail of the creel, while the upper extremity 3 will enter an aperture in the top rail in a conventional manner and for a well known purpose.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that I have provided a bobbin skewer which will be of extremely simple and light construction and which will be strong and durable and practically indestructable and which will not be broken or split should the same drop upon the floor. It will also be evident, owing to the construction of the bobbin skewer that the same will not roll readily as is the case with the common wooden bobbin skewer when dropped; but *ill simply turn upon its point 3 without rolling beneath the machinery and become lost or be out of reach of the operator. It will also be apparent that this form of bobbin skewed may be readily substituted for the common wooden bobbin skewer now in use and will be highly efficient as well as strong and durable.
While I have shown the preferred form of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
I claim:
1. A skewer for bobbins comprising a plurality of spaced Wire members having their main portions parallel, the opposite extremities of said members being brought together to afford points and secured one to the other, and a plate positioned adjacent one pointed extremity of the skewer and through which the members are disposed, said members being directed through the plate at points removed from the periphery thereof.
2. A skewer for bobbins comprising a plurality of spaced wire members having their main portions parallel, the opposite extremities of said members being brought together to aiford points and secure one to the other, and a plate positioned adjacent one pointed extremity of the skewer and through which the members are disposed, said members being directed through the plate at points removed from the periphery thereof, said members immediately below the plate and inwardly of the adjacent pointed extremity being bent inwardly to afford transverse straight portions with which the plate contacts.
3. A skewer for bobbins comprising a plurality of spaced wire members having their main portions parallel, the opposite extremities of said members being brought together to afford points and secured one to the other, and a plate positioned adjacent one pointed extremity of the skewer and through which the members are disposed, said members being directed through the plate at points removed from the periphery thereof, said members immediately below the plate being bent inwardly to afford transverse straight portions with which the plate contacts, said members at the opposite side of the plate in close proximity thereto being inwardly ofiset.
l. A skewer for bobbins comprising a plurality of spaced wire members having their main portions parallel, the opposite eX- tremities of said members being brought together to afford points and secured one to the other, and aplate positioned adjacent one pointed extremity of the skewer and through which the members are disposed, said members being directed through the plate at points removed from the periphery thereof, the periphery of the plate being angular.
