lie it known that I, Acorn L; Hansen, a citizen of the J United States, "residingat Evanston, county of. Cook, and State'of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement'in l gnitingDjevices, of which the following is a 'specification.
My invention is designed to produce a device which may be used by, minersusing acetylene gas lamps, now so greatly in use.

and is designedto obviate the annoyance caused by the failure of matches toignite, due to the dampness prevalent in mines.
My invention has for its object to pro duce a device which will produce a spark which will ignite the gas, and ,to construct the device so simply, yet strongly, that 1t 20 will be within tlieflmeans of the miners.
My means of accomplishing the foregoing may be more readily understood by having reference to the accompanying drawings, which are hereunto annexedand are a part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation'of my 1mproved clevice'showing the interior construction. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary detail view showing the arrangement of the friction wheel and sparking material.
As shown in the drawings, 1 is a handle which is formed of tubing and is provided with a pin or pivot 2.
4 is a rod formed of suitable material, such'as auermetall, pyrophoric, or any other of the well-known materials employed for 40 this purpose, which will when brought in contact with sharp or roughened points of steel produce a spark. This rod is engaged by an inverted U-shaped member 5 which is slidably mounted in a sleeve 6, the outer end of the U-shaped member being engaged by a 11601: 7 which is formed on the endof a coil spring 8, the other end being secured to a cap 9 fitted on the lower part of the tube 1. This arrangement serves to produce a constant spring tension upon the rod 4, hold ing it in engagement with the periphery of the wheel 8. y

thelatter being providedwith a hole 15 to which is secured one end of a coil spring 16, which holds the lug 14 at the lowest point ofthe circumference of the hub.

has the" effect of stretching the coil spring 176 so that when the ,leveris released the spring rotates the wheel 3 very rapidly, its roughened periphery contacting with the end of the rod 4: serving to produce a spark in the usual manner employed by devices of this character.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description that the operating parts of the device are almost entirely inclosed, thus preventing accidental displacement of the operating mechanism, which results in materially reducing the liability of the device to get'out of order.
Having described my invention, what I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, a tubular handle, a shaft mounted in one end of said handle, a wheel fixedly mounted on said shaft, the periphery of which is roughened, a sleeve formed on an upwardly extending portion of the tube, a U-shaped member slidably mounted in said sleeve, a rod of sparking material located in said sleeve intermediate the end of the U-shaped spring mounted within said tube, one end of which is secured to the upper end of the U-shaped member, the other end being secured to a cap mounted on the lower end of the tube, a lever fixedly attached to said shaft, saidlever being provided with a laterally extending hub, an outwardly projecting lug on said hub, which engages one end of a second coil spring mounted inside of the tubular handle, all combined and arranged as and for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character described atubular handle, a shaft having its ends journaled in the walls of the tube adjacent the one end thereof, a cap closing the other end of said tube, a wheel fixedly mounted on said shaft, the periphery of said wheel 2 e a V I 1,151,521
shaft, and springs located entirelywithin said tube, to produce a pressure on said sparking material, and to hold'said lever normally longitudinally of said tube.
3. In a device of the character described a tubular handle having a cap closing one "said; shaft in line with the op end, a sleeve formed from an upwardly extending portion of the tube at itsfother end, the passage through said sleeve being within the walls of the tube, a shaft having its ends journaled in the walls ofthetube adcent said sleeve, a wheel fixedly mounted 1th rough said sleeve, the periphery ofsaid wheel being roughened, a U-shaped member one end of which is slidably mounted in said,
