My invention relates to improvements in br'ake'sof the type adapted for use inconnection with traveling carriers that are slidable upon cables and has for its primary object to provide a novelly constructed brake attachment that may be readily and easily attached to carriers and will operate to retard the movement of the carriers or hold the carriers against movement altogether, when desired.
Another object is toimprove brakes of the character described so as to render them i more practical, reliable and eiiicient in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates a suspension cable for a carrier designated '2 as anentirety. The carrier 2 is shown only in part and is suspended by a pulley or pulleys 3. Thepulley 3 is mounted upon the cable 1 and connected with the pulley 3 is a depending receptacle supporting arm 4. :In the type of carrier which is illustrated in the drawing in part, the carrier consists of two upright members 4 and two pulleys 3.

My improved brake attachment comprises a brake lever designated 6 as an entirety that is pivoted intermediate itsends as at 7 to a clamping member 8 on one side ofs'aid clamping member. The clamping member 8 comprises a plate 9 that is pivoted to the lever 6 and a detachable plate 10 that is secured" to the plate 9' by means of bolts .11

l The clamping member 8 is designed to engage and clamp upon the rod 4 at a point adjacent the upper end of said rod. The I lever 6 is bowed as at 13 at a point between one end and the pivot point 7 thereof and at the free end of said bowed portion 13 is secured a brake shoe 14 that is approximately U-shaped in cross section and engages the cable 1. The curving of this lever 16 brings the free end of the curved portion into a position, so that the shoe 14 will be brought to bear against the cable 1.
A helical retractile spring 15 is secured to one end as at 16 to the rod or bar 5 and at its other end to an eye 17 carried on the bowed portion 13 of the lever 6. This spring 15 normally holds the brake shoe 14 into braking position. A hook designated lever 6, said end being notched as at 19' so as to receive the lower part of the hook and securely hold itself in position. The bowed portion 13 isofiset so as to not interfere with the spring 15 or adjacent parts of the carrier. r i
p In operation when it is desired to release the brake from position as shown in Fig. 1, that is, braking position, the lever 6 is moved upwardly and the notched end 19 thereof placed within the hook 18. It will be readily seen that the carrier will be held against movement if desired by the use of my improved brake.
