my invention is tov provide an apparatus by means ot which The main object of the manufacture of ingot molds may be materially cheapened and the number of operations so reduced that the molds can be produced rapidly and without skilled labor.
My molding apparatus is peculiarly adapted for use on a jarring machine but many of its advantages of construction will apply to the hand ramming of both core and cheek as is the present practice.
One object of my invention is to adapt both the core and cheek to be rammed at the same time on a jarring machine and to so design and assemble the parts that they will retain perfect alinement and not become loose when subjectedto the jar anrl.,,sh n%k of the machine during the ramming operation and that they can be readily lifted apart by a crane and reassembled thereby into perfect alinement after the removal of the pattern. v
By my invention I am enabled to draw away the core box and flask from the core and mold respectively with a single operation for-each withdrawal, thus materially reducing the labor cost in the manufacture of ingot molds.
A. further object of my invention is to make the core box and flask of such design and in so few parts that their maintenance is reduced to a minimum, their operation is simple, and much wear as compared with the presenttypesof' core boxes and flasks, being eliminated, their length of usefulness is materially extended.
A further novel feature of my invention relates to the stool which serves as a drag for the core and flask and is adapted to be removed from the jarring table so that the flask and core after being baked and prepared for molding can be assembled and poured on the same stool and drag on which they are rammed.

late to the construction of the flask in horizontally divided half sections which are so connected that they will separate when lifted apart; to the provision of gates in the flask sect-ion disposed opposite and below the position of the core molds for the ingot mold ears to give access into the flask to break the sand below the ears to facilitate the removal of the casting; and to the construction of a core box for use when the core is rammed separately from the flask and which is adapted to be centered on my combined stool and drag by the centering means for the flask.
My invention further comprises the novel details of construction and arrangement of parts which in their preferred embodiment only are hereinafter more particularly described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional elevation of the flask and core assembled on the stool drag for joint ramming, taken on the lines y y of Fig. Fig. 2 is a side ele ation of the same parts being lifted off the jarring table after the completion of the ramming operation. Fig. 3 is a partial horizontal sectional--v-ie\\ .taken on the line of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 shows the coreb'ox construction assembled on the stool drag for ramming the core separately from the cheek. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of Fig. 4 and illustrates the manner in which the core box is detachedfrom the core by a single lifting operation. On the jarring table 1 of any suitable jarring machine l seat a stool 2 having side openings provided therein to permit an elongated wedge key 3 to be inserted from side to side laterally therethrough and through a slot in the reduced lower end of the 'core plunger l, which projects. through a central opening in the top plate 5 of the stool, which plate forms. the drag for the molding apparatus, being provided with a recess 6 in which is formed a sand mold that will protect the stool proper from the molten metal. This drag plate 5 is provided with a plurality of vent openings 7 under the core and is shaped in plan to conform substantially to the cross section of the flask whieh is Formed in two horizontal half sections h. By this arrangement the flask or chill will also have vertical doivel pins by which it can be lowered onto the drag plate 5 and brought into true alinement with the core by having its. dowel pins enga 'e in the same holes which received the dowel pin .28 of the core box.

At the conclusion of this operation and after pouring the mold the gates are access is given removed, and through the door openings to the sand below the ear mold on the ingot mold. This sand can then be easily broken down and loosened so that the mold will free itself easily from the section can be lifted off from it without trouble. I may provide these door openings in all of the flask sections or only in those to be used opposite the lug or car on the mold.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:. i

In an apparatus for molding ingot molds, a stool supported drag, a flask mounted on the drag, centering devices for drag and flask which permit them to freely disengage when parted vertically, a stripping plate, and means to detachably connect it to the flask for joint removal therewith from the drag.

In an apparatus for forming molds for sand and the flask ingot molds by the jarring process, a jarring pendent clamps a stool forming the drag mount-ed free of fixed connection, a coilapsible core having its I arbor passing through the stool, wedge means to connectthe arbor and stool, a stripping plate mounted on the stool, a flask mounted on the stripping plate, means to center both tlasl; and stripping plate on said drag, and indeto hold the parts together, one set of clamps connecting the flash and stripping plate, and the other set connecting; the flask and stool drag.

In an apparatus for forming n olds for ingot molds on a jarring machine, in com binationpa combination stool and draghaving a cent-er hole and marginal dowel pin holes, a collapsible core comprising a vertically movable plunger having a shoulder near its lower end, which end is adapted to pass through said center hole in thedrag, a wedge key to engage said plunger below the drag and draw its shoulder. rigidly against said drag, laterally movable side plates for the core, means operable by the plunger to force said plates outwardly when it is drawn downwardly, a top plate to engage the upends ofthe core plates, a wedge engaging the plunger latter against the core plates, a flask, clamps and dowel pins to connect the flash and drag. and ineanson both flask and core plunger for engagement with means to lift them vertically.

In an apparatus for forming molds for ingot molds, a stool and drag, a. collapsible core, means to tie the core to the drag, a pattern surrounding the core and seated on the drag, a dash, astripping plate connected to the iiasl: and adapted to seat on the drag about the pattern, and means to lock the dash. stripping plate and pattern against lateral movement on the drag while leaving them free for vertical disengagement therefrom, substantially as described.
