Be it known that I, STUART W. PARSONS, a citizen of the United States, and a resi dent of New Britain, in the county of, Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates particularly to a device adapted to hold a door in open position. It was originally intended for application to garage or barn doors, though it may be adapted for other uses.
In the drawings, Figure l is a sectional top view showing the position which the parts of the device assume when the door 1s closed, the top of the door frame being removed. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but with the door open, and the top of the door frame bein shown. Fig. 3 is a detail side view of the oint between the two members of the holder. Fig. 4 is a view looking from the underside of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, 0!. denotes a portion of the wall of the building, I) the frame, and c the top thereof, and d the door supported on suitable hinges e. The holder comprises a pair of attachment members 1, 2, one of which, as 1, is secured to the underside of the top member of the door frame, and the other, 2, to the inner face of the door near its upper edge, and a pair of arms 3, 4, pivotally connected with the attachment members 1, 2, respectively, and with their inner ends connected together with the slip connection formed by a pin 5 on the arm 3 which works in a slot 6 in the arm 4. When the arms 3, 4, are in extended position as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, the curved end 7 of the arm 8 acts a ainst a stop 8 on the arm 4 to prevent the reIative longitudinal movement of the arms, and the two arms are held in extended position by the friction catch 9 constituted by a projection on the underside of the arm 4 which enters a depression in the arm 3.
10 is a chain attached to one of the arms, as 4, near the point of its connection with the other arm, and carried laterally over to an eye 11 which may be conveniently secured to the door and provides a means for breaking the joint to admit of the closing of the door.
The arms 3, 4, are formed from angle iron in order to provide a proper stiffness and rigidity for the structure, and as will be seen by reference to Fig. 1, when the door is closed the arm 3 fits under the arm 4 and assists in its support, the adjacent lateral webs of the angle iron arms being in contact with each other. It will also be observed that the attachment members are secured to the door frame and door at a sufficient distance from that side of the frame upon which the door is hinged to enable the arms to close together very compactly within the door frame; at the same time, the device when extended will hold the door in full open position and is up out of the way of the tops of carriages, automobiles,etc., which may be passing through the door. The attachment member 2 is preferably in the form of a channel iron, which affords a support for the arm 4 when the device is closed, and somewhat relieves the strain on the pivotal connection of the two parts.
The structure as here illustrated and described is susceptible of alterations and modifications without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim as my invention 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a door frame and a door hinged at one side thereof, of a holder comprising a pair of attachment members, one of which is secured to the underside of the top of said door frame and the other near the top of said door, and at suitable distances from the hinge support of said door, and a pair of arms pivotally connected with said members at their outer ends, a slot and pin pivotal connection between the inner ends of said arms, a stop on one of said arms adapted for cooperation with the laterally curved inner end of the other arm and a frictional catch between the inner ends of the said arms.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with 'a door frame and a swinging door carried at one side thereof on hinged supports, of a pair of attachment members, one of which is secured to the underside of the top of said door frame and inner ends said arms bein adapted to fold the other near the top of sald door, and a together when the door is c osed, with one of suitable distance from said hinged support sa1d lateral webs underlzging the other.
