Be it known that I, ELLis J. G. PHILLIPS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Bolts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawm 's.
lhis invention relates to door bolts and is particularly designed for use with a sliding door, or with two doors which are adapted to slide alongside of each other on parallel tracks. I
It is one of the objects of my invention to provide means for holding the bolt against turning out of its tightened clamping position, the same being adapted to be latched .in a plurality of positions whereby the bolt may be latched tightly even after it is worn through long continued use.
It is another object of my invention to provide a new and improvedform ofbolt and mounting parts thereof bythe use of which the bolt may be slipped readily out of clamping position without the use of tools of any kind, but by reason of which the bolt cannot normally be withdrawn from the door in which it is mounted without the use of tools. I
It is another object of my invention to provide for the locking of my bolt in clamping position so that the bolt cannot be re moved without the use ofthe proper key, the door or doors being thus locked against being opened. i
It is another object of my invention to improve devices of this type in sundry details hereinafter pointed out.

Referring to the several figures of the drawings in which corresponding parts are indicated by the same reference characters, 20 indicates a door upon which my improved device is mounted, said door being adapted to slide alongside of a member 21 which may be either another slide door or a ja-mb of the door 20. Mounted upon the front face of the door 20 is a face-plate 22 secured in position thereon by bolts 23 which pass also through suitable openings in the backplate 24. The back-plate 24 is provided with a housing 25 adapted to fit into the back face of the door for the reception of the hook of the bolt, as hereinafter de scribed. Upon the front face of the member 21 is secured a keeper plate 26 covering an opening 27 in the front face of the member 21, the plate 26 being secured in position upon the member 21 by means of screws 28 or in any other suitable manner.
29 indicates the bolt proper (see Fig. 12) being square in cross-section at its forward end and being provided with screw threads at its rear end. Mounted upon the rear end of the bolt 29 by means of screw threads is a hook member 30 comprising the hook or looking lug 31. The hook member 30 is retained in position upon the bolt 29 by means of aretainingsleeve 32 which is provided with a squared opening to fit the bolt 29, the members 30- and 32 being provided with interlocking lugs 33-3t, as clearly shown in said Fig. 12. As will be readily understood when the hook member 30 has been turned into position upon the bolt 29 the retaining sleeve 32 may be slid into engagement therewith so as to hold the hook mem ber 30 againstwithdrawal from the bolt 29. Mounted upon the forward end of the bolt proper 29 is a head 35, the opening through which head for the reception of the bolt 29 is square in crosssection so as to be held against rotation relative to the bolt. A nut I upon the bolt 29 by the retaining sleeve 32 as above described, the bolt will be inserted in the door from its rear face through a suitable opening in the door, into the position shown in Fig. 4 with the hook 31 in position in a suitable narrowed portion provided by the housing 25 of the back-plate 24.
The head 35 is then placed in position upon the front end of thebolt 29, in which position it is held by the nut 36. Vhen it is desired to clamp the door 20 in position against the member 21, upon the proper positioning of the door 20 relative to the keeper 26 the bolt member can be moved rearwardly through the opening in the face of the keeper 26. The handle 38 is then to be moved in clockwise direction into the position shown in Fig. 1. At the beginning of such turning movement of the bolt member through the medium of the handle 33 the hook 31 is caused to ride up a cam 39 carried by the keeper 26 upon its rear face. Inasmuch as the head 35 is brought into contact with the front plate 22 by the rearward movement of the bolt member preparatory to the turning movement of the bolt, it will be apparent that the turning of the bolt and the consequent rearward movement thereof serves to move the door 20 rearwardly relative to the member 21 causing the two parts to be clamped very securely together. A lug 40 is provided upon the cam 39 adapted to limit the turning of the hook 31 along the cam 39, as will be readily understood.
In order to hold the locking bolt against turning out of its clamping position the handle 38 is provided with a lug 41 adapted to engage a segmental rack 42 formed on the front face of the front .plate 22. The device is so arranged that when the bolt is first ap plied to a door the lug 41 is to engage one of the teeth of the rack 42 well toward the right in Figs. 1 and 8. As the operative faces of the hook 31 and the cam 39 become worn through long-continued use, the lug 41 will engage one after another of the teeth of the rack 42 to the left of the tooth ordinarily engaged in said figures, as will be readily understood.
Whenever my improved mechanism is mounted upon the inside face of the door the engagement of the lug 41 with the rack 42 is suflicient to insure the bolt against being turned from the outer face of the door and in that case there is ordinarily no necessity for providing an additional lock. My device is arranged, however, so as to be locked against unwarranted disengagement whenever desired, as when the mechanism is used on the outer face of a door. To this end,- the head 35 is provided with a radiallyextending flange 43' which-is adapted to be turned in the locking movement of the bolt past a perforated lug 44 extending outward from the outer face of the front plate22.
As will be readily understood, the insertion of the hasp of'a padlock through the perforated lug 44 serves to limit the turning of the head 35in counterclockwise direction in Fig. 1, the bolt being thus held against being turned out of its locking position.
In order to prevent the removal of the head 35from the bolt 29 when the hook 31 is in operative engagement with the cam 39, a flange 45 extending parallel with the plate 22 is provided a short distance in front of said plate, under which flange a plate 46 of the head 35 is adapted to work.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a door-bolting device,-the combina' tion of a bolt-member provided with a hook,
a keeper comprising 'acam adapted to be,
engaged by said hook for clamping said door in position, and means for holding said bolt-member at a plurality of positions against turning from clamping position.
2. In a door-bolting device, the combination of a bolt-member provided with a hook, a keeper comprising a cam adapted to be engaged by said hook for clamping said door in position, and wear-compensating means comprising a segmental rack adapted to be engaged at'any of a plurality of points for holding said bolt member against turning from clamping position.
3. In a door-bolting device, the combination of a bolt-member comprising a hook, a

In a door-bolting device, the combination of a bolt, a hook-member secured on one end of said bolt by means of screW threads, a retaining sleeve having a nonturning fit upon said bolt, said retaining sleeve having interlocking engagement With said hook-member, a head mounted on said bolt adjacent to said retaining sleeve, and means for removably securing said head and said retaining sleeve in operative position upon said bolt relative to said hookmember.
7. In a door-bolting device, the combination of a bolt-member comprising a hook, and a head, a keeper comprising a cam adapted to be engaged by said hook for bringing said head to bear upon the face of said door, and means for preventing the removal of said head from said bolt-member While the bolt-member is in clamping position.
8. In a door-bolting device, the combination of a bolt-member comprising a hook, and a head, a keeper comprising a cam adapted to me engaged by said hook upon the turning of said bolt-member for bringing said head to bear upon the face of said door, and a flange under Which a part of said head is adapted to lie When the bolt is in clamping position for preventing the removal of said head from said bolt-member.
9. In a door-bolting device, the combina tion of a bolt, a hook-member mounted on one end of said bolt, a back-plate through which said bolt is adapted to be slipped into position in a door, a head adapted to be secured on the front end of said bolt for furnishing a bearing for said bolt relative to said door and for normally preventing the Withdrawal of the bolt from the door, and a keeper comprising a cam adapted to be engaged by said hook-member for clamping said door in position.
10. In a door-bolting device, the combination of a bolt, a hook member mounted on one end of said bolt, a back-plate through which said bolt is adapted to be slipped into position in a door, said back-plate comprising a housing adapted to receive the hookmember when said bolt is partially retracted from said door and adapted to prevent the turning of the bolt When in such position therein, a head adapted to be secured on the front end of said bolt for furnishing a bearing for said bolt relative to said door and for normally preventing the Withdrawal of the bolt from the door, and a keeper comprising a cam adapted to be engaged by said hook-member for clamping said door in position.
