E. P. STEVENS. PALLET FOR DRYING BRICKS.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.3|, 1914 Patented Aug. 17, 1915.
2 SHEETS-SHEET 2.
` of one of the die members either by formf and 26 lso that the portion 28 of the blankv between them may be folded inwardly about the line of the fold-` 2T, as indicated more clearly in F ig.` 4, so that the portion 28 constitutes a hand-hold for lifting the pallet and the brick or bricks that may rest thereon. It is desirable that the portion 28 shall not be turned inward at a sharp angle, since f a well rounded corner at the line of fold is more satisfactory for engagement by the hand than is a sharply turned corner. The inner ends of the cuts.25 and 26 arefprefen ably extended toward the flanges 19 and 20 'a short distance, asindicated at 29 and W30,
so that the edges of the leg portion adjacent to the hand-hold may be turned inward to form reinforcing langes 31, as indica-ted in Figs. 3 and 5. As a result of this construction, the legs of the pallet are made perfectly rigid so that they cannot be deformed by any treatment the pallet is apt to receive. l
lin forming the pallet the main supporting portion of; the `blank is preferably clamped between dies having the desired surfaceof curvature for the form shown in Fig. 1, or flat for the form shown in Fig. 2. these dies being of a size corresponding'with the lines of foldll, 12,'13 and 14. When clamped in this position the leg sections 23jand 24C are 'o first folded around against the 'side faces ing-dies or by hammering the blank into the required position, -and then the ilanges`19,
20, 21 and 22 are folded over onto thetop", and bottom surfaces of the same die member either by forming-dies or by hammering.
Then the flanges 15 and 16 are folded over against .theV top and bottom surfaces of the same die member either'by forming-dies or by hammering, and the pointed end por-` tions of the flanges 15and 16 are folded around against the outside surfaces vof the leg sections -23 and 24` either by`formingdies or hammering; The pallet thus far completed is then removed -from the dies and entirely free from Arivets or other fastening devices, and thus adords an ideal surface for supporting -thebricks during the drying Y supported throughout during the drying of the same.
The blank shown in Fig. 2 is similar tothe blank shown in F ig. l, with the exception of the cuts 17 and 18a. Since this blank is designed for a pallet having a 'lat main supporting surface, the cuts are extended for a. portion of the distance across the flangesl 15E71 and 16a in line with thelines of folds 13a and 112, from which point these cuts are continued in substantially the same general direction as the cuts 17. and 18. As a result of this construction, when the blank is folded into position in substantially the same man ner as described above for the blank shown in4 Fig. 1 the portions of the; upper ends of the ianges 19a, 20, 21a, and 22, which are squared with the adjacent lines of fold, rest against the under surface of the main supporting portion of the pallet, While the remaining portions of these cuts provide the .Y
` tion 0f the hand-holds may be modified to meetyarious requirements without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is:
1. A pallet for drying bricks, consisting f of a single sheet of metal colnprising a main supporting portion, leg sections extending at an angle from said main supporting porporting portion in substantially the same d1- rection las the leg sections, and projections y hold saidleg sections in supporting portion, leg sections extending `at :an Sangle@ from said'main' supporting' por tiomlianges .extending from said main supporting portion in substantially the same dimotion 'as the leg sections,`and projections Y tion, Hanges extending from said main su j the hand-holds are made by bendingin the sections 28 either by forming-diesfor`-iam-- mering, and the flanges 31 are also bent inl-j Ward either-by forming-dies or, hammering-.- to the .position indicated lin Figs'. 3. and,5;f` The resultant pallet, in addition .to ".fbeing very cheap to Ina-ke, since the operatioiisniay be rapidly and easily perfQrIned,-is particuf larly wadapted for thepurposefoigirhichit; isintended, as thema-in supportingsrface is smooth throughout its entire extent and iso extending from the leg sections and said flanges to rigidly hold said leg sections in supporting position. said leg sections having bent portions constituting hand-holds.
