T all 'whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY S. KUHN, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Waynesboro, inthe county of Franklin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful .Viso 'Screw and Handle, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains toa screw and handle for vises, and aims to provide a lo novel and improved means upon the shank of the screw for'holding orcarrying the handle or tommy-bar, whereby 'the handle may be conveniently adjusted or set at various angular positions relativeto the screw,
and about the aXis thereof, when circumstances render it desirable or necessary.
Another object of the invention is to provide unique means for assembling the screw` and handle or tommy-bar, whereby the handle may be employed for forcibly rotating the screw in either direction, and whereby the handle may be adjusted angularly about the axis of the screw when desired, and without detracting from the efficiency of the device.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character indicated, which will alsoA tend to hold the handle or tommy-bar against slipping or sliding movement longitudinally of itself.
It is also within the scope of the inven.- tion, to provide a device for assembling the screw and handle or tommy-bar, which will be comparatively simple, durable and com- 35 pact in construction, which willbefinexpensive and easy to manufacture, and which will be convenient, practical and efficient in its use.
Vith the foregoing and other objects in '4o ,view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the com-y bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood es that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made withinthe scope of what is claimedwithout departing from the spirit of the invention.

there is provided a tubular khead 1 having its inner end secured in any suitable manner upon the shank 2 of the screw 3, the screw being illustrated as being detached fromthe body of the vise, since it is'V well knownfhow the screw is applied tothe vise, and this need vnot be illustrated or described.
rlhe enlarged head 1 carried-by the outer end of the screw is provided with aV socket or recess l extending longitudinally thereof from its outer end, and the outerjend or end face of thel head-1 is provided with an annular series of diametrically opposite pairs vof radialnotches 5 extending from the periphery of the head 1 to the socket or bore 4.
Al plug Gis slidablel snuglywithin vthe socket or bore 4, and is provided adjacent its outer end with a diametrical or transverse bore or opening 7 through which the diametricalr handle or tommy-bar 8 is slidably engaged to be shifted laterally as usual. -The handle 8 is engageable in the notches 5 whereby the handle may be swung to rotate the screw 8 in either direction.
A sleeve or ring 9 is mounted slidably and rotatably upon the periphery of the head 1 and surrounds the notches 5, and the sleeve 9 is provided with diametrically opposite apertures 10 adjacent its outer end through which the diametrical handle or tommy-bar 8 is passed.
rllhe head 1 is provided with an inwardly Y facing peripheral shoulder 11 between the ends of the sleevev 9 and spaced inwardly from the notches 5, and the inner end of the sleeve 9 isprovided with an inturned drawn into a pair of diametrically opposite f i notches 5, since the sleeve 9 through which thehandle 8 is engaged, is forced inwardly through the iniuence offthe spring 18. rlhus, the handle or tommy-bar 8 may be swung for forcibly rotating the screw 3 in either direction for adjusting'the jaws of the vice (not shown). Now, if itis desirable or vnecessary to change the angular position of the handle 8V with respect to the screw 8, this may be readily accomplished by pulling or forcing the handle 8 longitudinally outward so that it is withdrawn from the notches 5, and which will enable the handle to be swung in one direction or the other, without rotating the screw 3, so that the handle 8 may be readjusted and then when released, will be drawn into the respective `notches 5 under the influence of the spring 13 to again enable the handle to be swung for rotating the screw. The handle 8 being engaged through the slidable sleeve 9 and the plug 6, will cause ythe handle to be guided for true longitudinal movement, and the said sleeve and plug rwill prevent the handle binding or swinging in other than in a plane at right angles to the axis of the screw. Furthermore, the sleeve 9 being yieldably forced inward by the tension of the spring 13, will tend to bind the handle upon the bar 8 between the outer portions of the apertures 10 of the sleeve 9, and the bottoms or seats of the notches 5, to prevent the handle from sliding or slipand with radial notches in its end face, a l
sleeve slidable upon the periphery of the head and formed at its inner end'with an internal flange, a coiled expansion spring confined between the said flange and the shoulder, and adiametrical handle passing through the outer end portion of the sleeve and engageable in said notches.
