To all whom t may concern e Be it known that I, PIERRE FoN'rAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and Useful Improvements in Fastener-Setting Implements.

The invention relates to means for applying a fastener-to secure together the ends or edges of any soft material.

In the drawings Figure l is a perspective view of a wrapped package the ends of which wrapper have been secure-d by a fastener. Fig. 2 isa side elevation of pliers lpartly broken away, showing a fastener to be secured therewith. Fig. 3 is a plain view of Fig. 9,. Fig. 4 is a top plain view of the fastener. Fig. 5 is a section view showing one application of the fastener secured by the improved device.

Referring to the drawings: A represent a disk of metal having integrals prongs, a, punched from the blank: and apertures a.

5 and 6 represent the handles of a pliers pivoted at 7, and having flattened ends for holding and applying a metal fastener. Upon the flattened end of handle 5 is mounted a spring, 9, secured thereto by the rivet, 10, and having free ends, l1, that depend through the aperture, 8.

The flattened end of the handle, 6,'terminates in a circular raised portion, having'the annular concave groove, 5a. The disk fastener, A., is applied to the end of the handle, 5, by inserting the free ends, 11, of the spring, 9, into the apertures, a', and is held thereto, by reason of lateral pressure of the spring ends upon the disk. The disk fastener being applied to the pliers, the flattened end of the handle, 6, is inserted beneath the parts to be secured together, and pressure applied to the handles, whereby, the prongs, a, which extends substantially 90 degrees from the body of the metal fastener, will be forced through the material to be united, and coming in contact with the annular groove, 5a, will be curled back and outwardly through the material and securedly unite them to the material in such a manner that the prongs are protected from being tampered with, and a wrapper upon a package is securely fastened without any other agent as twine.

While I have shown a fastener applied to thewrapper ends of a package, by means of the improved setting implement, it is obvious that a fastener can be applied to other purposes by the said fastener setting implement, and I dont limit myself to the precise details of construction except as pointed out in the appended claim.

I claim:

Means for applying a pronged disk having a plurality of spaced apertures; said means comprising a stationary jaw against which the prongs are forced; an apertured movable jaw, having a bearing portion engageable with the marginal portion of the disk, and spaced holding members extending through the aperture inl said jaw, and engageable with certain of the apertures in the disk for frictionally holding the disk fastener' in position on the movable jaw when said jaws are forced together.
