Description
L. S. HALDEMAN. STOVE AND FURNACE GRATE.
wi bvwooao LEE S. HALDEMAN, 0F MARIETTA, PENNSYLVANIA.
'srovn AND FURNACE GRATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 20, 1915.
Application filed April 25, 1914. Serial No. 834,539.
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, LEE S. HALDEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mar'ietta, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stove and Furnace Grates, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to stove or furnace grates, and has for its primary object to provide a grate wherein the bed thereof is of novel form, including oval-shaped disks rotatably mounted within the grate frame so as to permit the shaking of the grate for the dumping of the fuel or the shaking thereof.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a grate which is extremely simple in construction, reliable and eflicient in its operation, and inexpensive in manufacture. With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the grate constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical hori zontal sectional view showing the ovalshaped disk in normal position. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the grate in dumping position. Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the grate. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the handle or crank for shaking the grate. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view through the shaft and the handle crank connected thereto.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates a stationary grate frame, which may be of any desirable shape, having spaced transverse bars B, the said frame A being supported Within the stove or furnace in any desirable manner. Bolted or otherwise se cured centrally to the under side of the frame A at opposite ends thereof are bearing plates 5 which detachablysecure a rotatable shaft 6 upon the same,'the forward or front end of the shaft being formed with a dove-tail shaped portion 7 with which engages a detachable crank or handle 8, the
furnace.
Secured to or integral with the shaft 6 and arranged between the bars B of the frame A are oval-shaped disks 10 which serve as movable grate bars to cooperate with the bars B of the frame A for supporting the, fuel in the fire box. It will be noted that on rocking the disks 10 by slightly turning the shaft 6 in the reverse direction the fuel can be shaken, and on turning the said shaft 6 a half circle the disks 10 will be turnedto have their longer extent vertically disposed,- and thereby permit the dumping of the fuel from the fire bed.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is 'A stove or furnace grate comprising a frame having a series of spaced parallel transverse bars, a shaft journaled in the frame centrally thereof and having joined thereon a series of oval-shaped members with their marginal edges made flat to provide cutting edges, the said oval shaped members being arranged between the bars, the said shaft being extended without the frame and having a dove-tail shaped portion formed on the saidextension, and a handle having a socket three walls of which interfit with the dove-tailed portion of the shaft, the-socket being sufficiently large to permit of the detachable engagement of the handle with the shaft for the revolving of the same.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEE S. HALDEMAN.
