H. FUKUZUMI.
BOILER AND GAS HEATER. APPLICATION magi SEPT.29, 1914.

HAYZON FUKUZUMI,- RYE, NEW YORK,
BOILER AND GAS-HEATER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
, Application filed September 29, 1914. Serial No. 86%,144.
I water and gas heater wherein a supply of water can be readily heated for domestic purposes either by means of the usual water back in the kitchen range, or by means of a separate gas heater.
To this end the invention essentially con sists ofa boiler having a central vertical fiue in which is arranged a heating coil and a discharge pipe forming a continuation thereof, and a suitable heater arranged below the boiler.
Specifically stated I the invention is the provision of a heater of this character wherein the central flue of the boiler from a point immediately above the coil is contracted throughout the remaining portion of its length so as to concentrate the heat about the discharge pipe, whereby the latter is subject to heat of the greatest intensity as is possible to obtain under ordinary conditions.
Another important object of the invention is the provision-of a construction of a device of .this character wherein the heat is initially confined about the coil with a View of instantaneously heatingthe same to' hasten the circulation. I
In carrying out my invention I aim to provide a construction wherein the parts are compactly arranged, the heater being so disposed as to be entirely out of View, and embodying among other features simplicity in construction, durability and efficiency in operation.
In the drawing forming. a part of'this application like numerals of reference indi- 'cate similar parts in the several views and in whicha-=-- Figure l is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 2 is a. horizontal sectional view taken on line aa of Fig. 1. ig. 3 is a. similar view taken on line b-b'of Fig. 1. Fig. 4.is a detail view of the casing.
eferring more particularly to the drawing 5 designates the boiler supported upon the stand 6, the boiler vhaving a central ver with the hot the primary object of' .leading into the shown) of the range Patented July 20, 915.
tical flue 7 opening through both ends there.
of. The cold water-supply pipe-leading into the boiler and terminating adjacent the bottom thereof is indicated at 8, while the'hot water pipe 9 is shown as leading from the top of the boiler. I 4
As shown the central vertical flue 7, comprises an enlarged lower portion 10 in which is arranged the heating coil 11, the flue being reduced or contracted'as. at 12 from a.
point immediately above thecoil throughout the remaining portion of its length. Arranged within the contracte the discharge pipe 13' form continuation of the tending through the top of the boiler and connected by means of the union 14 with thepipe 15, the latter being'suitably connected water pipe 9 as shown. Manifestly by reason of this construction the ng A aj straight products of combustion from the'burner 16 disposed immediately below the coil 11 is concentrated about the discharge pipe 13 whereby the latter throughout its length is subject to heat of the greatest intensity as is possible to obtain in devices of this character under ordinary conditions. The lower end of the coil 11 is connected with the pipe 17, the latter being connected by the union 18 with the horizontally disposed pipe 19 which in turn is connected with the pipe 20 usual water back (not 21. Leadingfrom the water back of the range to theboiler is the inlet pipe 22. Leading from the bottom of the boiler and connected with the pipe 19 is an outlet pipe 23 by means of which the proper circulation is obtained irrespective of whether the gas heater, or range, or both is used for heating the water.
The burner Idsurrounds the pipe 10 and is supported by the fuel supply pipe 24l,'in which is arranged a suitable valve 25.
With a View of initially confining the heat from the burner 16 about the coil 11, for inportion 12 'i's*= heating coil 11 and exstantaneous heating the same to hasten the 1 coil 11' as shown,
The open end of 'pipe 8 passes from is provided with a circumferential series of air openings 20 to promote proper combustion, the opening adjacent the closed end of the casing allowing the products of combustion to escape from the casing into the contracted portion of the flue.
With the construction shown and described, I provide for two distinct circulations depending upon the means employe for heating the water. For instance with a lirev inthe range the cold water from the the boiler through the heated and returned to the boiler through the pipe 21, from where it is drawn through the pipe 9 for use. When there is no fire in the range the gas heater can be quickly put into use. As the coil 11 is heated by the burner 16 the hot wateris drawn through the pipes23 and '19 into the coil from where it passes through the discharge pipe 13 into the hot Water pipe 9 for use. With the gas heater in operation, and the water not being used, the
pipe 20, where it is same is returned to the boiler through the pipe 9.
Depending from the pipe 19, is a pipe 29 by means of which the boiler can be emptied when desired, the pipe being provided with a suitable valve 30.
It is believed from the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanytieal flue therethrough, a cold 7 thereof, a
memee ing drawing, the nature and advantages of the invention will be thoroughly under- What I claim'isz- In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a boiler havlng a central verpipe entering the boiler through the top hot water pipe leading through said top, said flue comprisinganenlarged lower end portion and a contracted upper portion, a casing of uniform diameter snugly closing the same, said casing being closed at its upper end and having a circumferential series of openings adjacent thereto, a straight pipe extending through a closed end of the casing and forming a continuation of the coil, said straight pipe being arranged in said contracted portion of the flue and projecting through the top of the boiler for connection with said hot water pipe, and a gas burner arranged within the casing below the coil. 7'
In testimony whereof 1, affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
