To all whom it may concern l Beit known that I, HENRY THURsToN, of 92 Barrack street, in the city of Kingston` Province of Ontario, Dominion ,of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boiler Water-Circulating Dei vices, of which the following is a specification.
.This-invention relates to feed water devices a dapted to be utilized .in boilers and the like and -the objects of the invention are Vcirculation of the water in the boiler, to facilitate in removing scum and otherl foreign matter suspended in the water, to simplify and reduce the number of working parts and other objects which will be shown sentially of the im roved construction of water circulating diavice -particularly described and set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings forming part of the same. i
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse section of a marine boiler showing the improved water circulating device attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of part of the improved water circulating device showing the cylinder broken in the center.' Fig. a is a view partly sectional of the water eed pipe -and check valve associated therewith.
Like-characters of reference refer to likel parts in the several drawings. Referring to thedrawings, a boiler and B the water circulating device yattached thereto. This boiler may be of any usual construction, that shown being of the Scotch or marine type which is well known in the art and not forming part of the prescirculating device is in combination therewith, it is deemed unnecessary to further enlarge upon the same. l
The water circulatin device B consiste of thehorizontally disposed cylinder 1 which is provided at. one end with a cover 2 formed integral therewith, such cover having Aa flanged outlet pipe 3 extending at right angles therefrom and located on the lower side andv adjacent to the outer periphery thereo'the other end of the said cylinder being provided with a cover 4 formed integral therewith' having an orifice 5 through the center thereof Aand being prohereafter, and it consists es` A represents 4 the check valve 21 mounted on the vided with a plurality of orifices located near its outer periphery with which the bolts. 6 are adapted to engage. This cylinder is further provided intermediate of its ends with an outlet orifice 7 extending through the top of its outer periphery, the object of which will be made clear hereafter.
The flanged outlet pipe 3 is connected at one end to the pipe 8, the other end of which is in turn connected to the Vside plate of the boiler A and adaptedl to communicate with the scum cock 9 mounted on the outer face of the said side plate.
' 10 represents a pipe provided at one end with a flange 11 having a plurality of orifices therethrough adapted to engage with the bolts 6 whereby the said pipe 1ssecured to the cylinder 1 in which position the bore of the pipe registers with the orifice 5 in the cover 4, the opposite end of thepipe 10 'being provided with a stufiing box 12 havwardly disposed branch pi e connection 14 located adjacent to the stu ng box 12.
15 represents a pipe which is adapted to slidably fit the packing gland 13 and the stuiiing box 12, the outer end of such pipe being provided with a flange 16 having a plurality of orifices therethroughitbe inner end 'of the said pipe being tapered vand designed to extend into the pipe 8 to a distance just beyond the bore of the branch pipe connection 14, the pipe 15 being ofra' size such that there is an annular space between the outer peripherybof the said pipe and the inner periphery of the pipe 10 which. is Aclearly illustrated in Fig. 3.
17 represents a ipe which is connected at one end to the e bow` 18 which in turn is provided on its opposite end withla iiange 19 having a plurality of orifices therethrough designed to register with the orifices in the flange 16 and be secured thereto by bolts or the like, the other endl of the pipe 17 being connected to the end plate 20 of theA boiler A land being adapted to communicate with outer face of the said end plate, which check valve is in turn connected to the feed pump of the boiler.
22 represents a suction pipe which is connected at its upper end by threaded engagement with the branch pipe connection 14, such pipe extending vertically downwardly between adjacent nests of tubes and furnaces to the bottom of the boiler.
The horizontally disposed cylinder,pipe 10, pipe 15, elbow 18, pipe 17 and pipe 8 are designed to be located just below the normal water level of the boiler.
'llhe operation ofthe device is as follows: rl`he feed pump of the boiler is started and water is forced through the check valve y21, the pipe 17, the elbow 18 and the pipe 15 being delivered through the tapered end of the last said pipe into the pipe 10. lin this operation the water discharged from the pipe 15 exerts an entraining action on the water located in the bottom of the boiler which circulates upwardly through the pipe 22 and discharges from the upper end thereof into the pipe 10 from whence it is dischargedrinto the cylinder 1 and leaves the same through the orifice 7 located in the top of the outer periphery of the said cylinder. When the feed pump is stopped this circulation of water has been found by experiment to continue its circulation, the operation of the pump only tending to initially create such circulation.
llt will be clear that the wa terwhich circulates upwardly through the pipe 22 will carry with it a considerable amount of foreign matter suspended therein and this matter when discharged into the cylinder l. will be delivered into the pipe 3 and thence into the pipe 8 from which it can be blown od by means of the scum cock 9.
Although in the embodiment illustrated only one such device is shown in'connection with the boiler, it will be quite clear that to facilitate in producing such a circulation that the circulating dev'ices'may be arranged in a series, all being fed vfrom the same inlet feed pipe.
Any suitable material may be utilized in the manufacture of the several parts of the water circulating devices, steel and cast iron being preferably employed.
s many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention, within the scope of the claims,'con structed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What ll claim as my invention is:
l. rllhe combination with a boiler of a water circulating device located below the normal water level of the said boiler, comprising a cylinder having an outlet orifice located in the top thereof, a pipe connected et one end to lthe said cylinder, a staffing Lineale box in the said pipe, a gland adapted to make threaded engagement therewith, a feed pipe. adapted to slidably it the said stuffing box and form with the inner periphery of the first said pipe, an annular space, a suction pipe designed to be attached to the lower side of the first said pipe adjacent to the said stuffing box. such suction pipe extending downwardly to the bottom of 'the said boiler and means for removing the scum from the water, as and for the purpose specified. p
2. The combination with a boiler of a water circulating device located belowl the normal water level of the said boiler, consisting of a horizontally disposed cylinder having an outlet orifice through the top thereof an outlet pipe extending from one end of the said cylinder, the other end be ing formed with a cover having an orific through the center thereof, a pipe provided with a Harige 'ada ted to. be secured to the said cover, a stu g box on said pipe, a gland adapted to make threaded engagement therewith,'a branch pipe connection located on the lowerv side of the outer periphery of the said pipe adjacent to the said stung box, a suction pipe designed to make threadpipe on annular space and means for remov-A ing the scum from the water, as and for the purpose specified. f
3. llhe combination with a boiler of a feed water device adapted to be located below the normal water level of the said boiler, con-A sisting of a cylinder having an outlet extending through the top thereof, such cylinder being provided with a cover formed integral therewith, a discharge pipe entending from the said cover the end of the said cylinder being provided with a cover having an orifice through the center thereof, a pipe designed to be attached to the second said cover, a stutiing box on said pipe, a gland adapted to make threaded engagement therewith, a branchspipe extending from the lower periphery ofthe said pipe and located adjacent to the said stuiingbox, a suction pipe designed to be attached to the said branch pipe, a feed pipe adapted to slidably t the sald gland and stuiing box the inner end of the said pipe being tapered and adapted to form' an annular space `with the innerperiphery of the first said pipe, a pipe designed to be secured at one end to the outlet pipe, and a scum cock communicating with the last said pipe as and 'for the purv pose specified.
