UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
HORACE S. BLACK, OF BUCHANAN, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-DRIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 114,519, dated May 9, 1871.
To whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, HORACE S. BLACK, of Buchanan, in the county of Berrien and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in ClothesRacks; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved rack partially extended, and Fig. 2 is a detached and enlarged view of one of the joint-sleeves.
Like letters refer to like parts in each ii gurc.
The nature of this invention relates to an improvement in the construction of folding racks for drying clothes and otherlike purposes; and it consists, first, in the peculiar construction of the device in such a manner that the sections maybe folded flat against each other; and, secondly, in the novel and peculiar construction of the joint-sleeves used for hingin g the sections together.
In the drawing, A represents a cylindrical post, in the sides of which are mortised several wooden bars, B. C is a tubular casting, in the general form of a T, the part a thereof forming a socket, which is slipped over and secured on the end of each bar B.
A circumferential slot, 1), is made in the wall of the larger tube or arm of the T. Another post, A, is then passed through the series of sleeves 0r tubes, and a pin or stud, c, is inserted therein through each slot 11, which extends around the sleeve from one point of juncture of the socket therewith to the other, so that the said post A, when fitted with crossbars in the manner described, will form a second section, against which the first may be folded flat, the slot in the sleeve permitting the stud c to move around sufiiciently far for that purpose in either direction, while the stud effectually prevents any "ertical movement of y the post in the sleeves.
Any desired number of sections thus constructed may be in like manner hinged together to form a clothes-rack.
The hinge-sleeve is equally applicable in gates, saving in each gate a post.
In a rack composed of four sections three posts are saved over the number employed in the usual manner of constructing such racks.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The T-shaped tubular joint-sleeve C, provided with the circumferential slot b, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The construction of a clothes-rack wherein the posts A A, cross-bars B, and jointsleeve C are arranged with relation to each other, and operate, as herein described.
HORACE S. BLACK.
