CIGAR, CIGARETTE, AND MATCH DISPENSER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 29, 1915..
Application filed December 15, 1914. Serial No. 877,382.
dispensing cigars, and cigarettes as well as matches for lighting the same;
A further object is to provide a contalner for cigars and cigarettes, which is normally closed and adapted to be readily actuated for dispensing one of the contained articles,
such operation automatically effecting the I opening of a match receptacle.
A still further object is to provide a serviceable storage casing for cigars or cigarettes which is bodily movable for individually dispensing the contained articles from the top thereof, the movement of the casing automatically releasing the retaining catch of a spring opened match drawer slidably positioned in a base upon which the casing is mounted.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and set forth in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like-designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is avertical transverse sectional view of the device taken upon a plane adjacent one end of the casing. Fig. 4: is an inverted perspective view of a section of the foundation base of the device showing a chamber for the match drawer with the catch mechanism for the drawer, the bottom plate being removed. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the match drawer detached, and Fig. 6 is a per spective view of the casing carried trip detached and designed for engaging the match drawer catch.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, it will be noted that the casing 10 which is designed for storing either cigars or cigarettes desired within the inner chamber 11 thereof is made in the form of an artistic representation of a house or cabin, being normally seated upon a solid foundation or base 12 which represents the lot, while steps 13 lead to the top 14 of the foundation which represents a yard and has a border fence 15. At one corner of the yard a well 16 is positioned forming an open top receptacle 17 which is serviceable as an ash tray or receptacle, while a representation'in miniature idly mounted upon the foundation 12 extends through a central longitudinal slot 22 in the bottom of the casing. and also through a similar slot 23 in alinement therewith through the top of the casing. the casing bep I ing slidably mounted for vertical movement upon the said post. Transverse bars 24: are carried by the casing traversing the bottom "slot 22 thereof and are slidably received in vertical longitudinal slots 25 of the said post, the said slots extending substantially the same height as the ridge 26 of the casing roof. Opposite chimneys 27 are provided at the top of the post 21 and in central alinement with the said slots 25 and are provided with horizontally alining top grooves 28 adapted for receiving a single cigar or cigarette therein when the casing 10 is elevated to the limit of its movement with the bars 24 positioned at the tops of the slots 25 at which time the grooves 28 will be in alinement with the upper inner open end of the bottom slot 22. it being noted that the chimneys 27 are all substantially the same height as the height of the slot 22.
A bottom chamber 29 is provided in the foundation 12 and is provided with a bottom plate 30 secured to the bottom of the foundation, while the said chamberhas an outer open side 31 for allowing a match. drawer 32 to slide outwardly and'inwardly of the chamber 29 within which the said drawer is positioned. A strip 33- having projecting ends is provided upon the bottom of the drawer atone end thereof and has its said ends projecting within the opposite elongated notches 34 of the said foundation and over which notches and strip and base plate 30 is secured thus limiting the length of travel of the drawer. An opening 38 circular in cross section extends inwardly of the foundation 12. and opens at the inner end ofthe chamber 29, the said opening being designed to accommodate a rod 35 slidable therein and which is centrally carried by therear wall 36 of the drawer, while a helical spring 37 encircles the rod 35 and is seated'within the said opening 38 and has its outer end resiliently engaging the drawer wall 36 whereby the drawer is normally outwardly'influenced by the expanding tendency of'the said spring. A slightly resilient catch or hook 39 is secured to the foundationat therear and top of the chamber 29 and normally depends into the path of travel of a catch plate 40 projecting upwardly from the said drawer wall 36. By this provision, it will be seen that when the drawer 32 is forced inwardly against the action of the spring 37 toits closed position the catch hook 39 automatically engages the plate 40 for. retaining the drawer so positioned.
catch releasing device is carried by the foundation consisting of a rocker arm 41 which is of right-angle shape and is pivoted to a post 42 within the chamber 29. An operating lever 43 has its inner end pivoted toone end'of the arm 41 while the opposite free end 44' of the said arm normally rests engaging beneath the catch hook 39. The outer end of the rod 43 projects outwardly of the foundation 12 and is provided with a finger plate45, a contraction spring 46 encircling the rod 43 normally holding the said: rod projected.
A. trip 47 of the form illustrated in Fig. 6 is secured to the bottomiof the casing 10 and has a triangular lower end 48 which extends beneath and in contact with the catch 39 when the casing is normally positioned seated upon the foundation 12.
From this detailed description of the invention, thecomplete operation of the device will be at once apparent. Cigars or cigarettes being provided in the chamber casing 11, the casing is manually-elevated until one of the articles contained therein rests within the grooves 28 when the casing is lowered to its normal position with the chimneys 27 extending above the gable portions of the casing and with the article mounted upon the chimneys where it may be readily removed. The trip 47 is normally positioned engaging the catch 39 as illustrated inFig. 3,. and the elevating'of the casing brings the upper inclined side 49 of the trip head 48 against the catch and thereby elevates the catch simultaneously releasing the same from the plate 40 upon the dispensing movement of the casing, and the spring 37 which is under compression, being thus released forces the match drawer to its open position. It will be evident that whenever it is desired to open the match drawer without removing an article from the casing, the plate 45 may be depressed for rocking the arm 41 and moving upwardly the arm end 44 and the catch 39 for releasingthe drawer, plate 40.
It will thus be seen that a serviceable desk or counter ornament is provided, the external appearance of which will not disclose the nature of the device, but which at the same time is serviceable in holding and dispensing both cigars or cigarettes as well as matches. I
While the form of the invention shown and described is what is believed to be the preferred embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
