Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MAROELLUS W. JONES, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Carthage, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trip-Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in trip hooks and is particularly designed for use in handling mine buckets and intended to provide simple means for disconnecting the hoisting rope from the mine bucket bail.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a bucket supporting hook with a spring controlled latch adapted to close the throat of the hook when the bucket is supported thereon.
With the above and other objects in view the invention comprises certain combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts. clearly described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the preferred form of the invention, showing a spring latch adapted to automatically open the throat of the hook when the weight of the bucket has been removed from the hook. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing a construction in which the latch is opened by a manuallv operated spring.
Referring to the accompanying drawings illustrating the practical embodiment of the invention, 5 designates the bucket supporting hook, which has a shank 6 provided with a terminal eye 6 and with a latch eye 6", which may be formed, as shown, by coil ing the material of the shank upon itself to form a closed loop. The eye 6 is disposed at a right angle to the shank 6 and a hoisting element or rope 7 extends downwardly through the eye 6 and has connection with the latch plate 8, through its eye 8*. The plate 8 is pivotally secured to the shank 6 by means of the pivot pin 9.
The latch plate 8 is substantially pear shaped, and the pivot pin 9 extends through one corner portion of the wider end or base of the body of the plate, while the eye 8 is located on the opposite corner portion of said wider end, and when the plate is in its open or unlocking position the eye 8 occupies a position below the pivot 99. The narrower end of the plate 8 is formed with an offset projection or stop 10, which is adapted to enter an eye 5, formed in the point of the hook 5, and to have interlocking engagement with said hook by means of said projection and eye 5*.
The hoisting element or rope 7 is formed or provided with a stop 7 and between said stop and the eye 6 of the hook shank, an expansion spring 11 is disposed around the element or rope 7, so as to exert pressure against the latch plate 8 and automatically move the plate to open or unlocking position when the bucket is removed from the hook 5.
The weight of the bucket on the hook 5 will cause the pivot 9 and the shank 6 to move downwardly on the rope or element 7, thereby compressing the spring 11, and bring the projection 10 into interlocking relation with the nose or end of the hook, thereby closing the throat 5X of said hook. So long as the weight of the bucket, or other element hoisted is on the hook, the latch will be held closed. When the weight of the bucket or other element hoisted is trans ferred to another support, the spring 11 will automatically expand, thus opening, the latch and permitting the ready removal of the bail of the bucket, or of any other device for connecting the hoisted element with the hook.
The invention provides a simple, inexpensive, and eflicient hoisting hook, by means of which the hoisting of buckets and other articles or materials will be rendered safe and easy.
In Fig. 2 I have illustrated a modified form of the invention, in which a manually operated latch is provided to close the throat of the hook. In this figure, 12 designates the hook, which has a shank 13 provided with a terminal eye 13*, and with a latch eye 13*. A latch plate 14: is pivoted to the eye 13", by means of the pivoted pin 15, and a hoisting element or rope 16 extends through the terminal eye 13 and has connection with the latch plate 14 at a point normally above the eye 13 The hoisting element, which may be in the form of a metal rod, is provided with a stop 17 and between the stop 17 and the eye 13 an expansion spring 18 is arranged around the hoisting element 16, so as to exert tension to hold the element 16 normally elevated with relation to the hook, and thus hold the latch plate 14: in normal locking position across the throat 12X of the hook 12.
To unlock the latch plate the spring 18 is compressed by manual effort, thus causing the latch plate to move downwardly and open the throat of the hook.
Having described my invention I claim 1. In a hoisting hook the combination of a shank provided with a terminal eye at one end thereof, and a latch eye formed spaced from said terminal eye, a latch plate, a pivot pin supporting said latch plate, a hoisting element secured to said latch plate, said latch plate having an eye for receiving said element, a projection provided upon the latch plate, a hook portion formed upon said shank and provided with an eye adapted to receive said projection, a stop located upon said hoisting element, and a spring mounted upon said hoisting element intermediate said stop and terminal eye and adapted to exert pressure upon said terminal eye substantially as described.
2. In a hoisting hook the combination of a shank provided with a terminal eye at one end thereof, and a latch eye formed spaced from said terminal eye, a pear-shaped latch plate pivoted to said latch eye at one corner of its base, a hoisting element secured to said latch plate at the other corner of the base and extending upwardly through the terminal eye, a projection provided upon the latch plate, a hook portion upon said shank provided with an eye adapted to receive said pro ection, a stop located upon said hoisting element, and an expansion spring mounted upon said hoisting element intermediate said stop and terminal eye and adapted to exert pressure against said latch plate, substantially as described.

In a hoisting hook the combination of a shank provided with a terminal eye at one end thereof, disposed at right angles to said shank, and a latch eye formed spaced from said terminal eye, by coiling the material of said shank upon itself to provide a closed loop, a substantially pear shaped latch plate, a pivot pin extending through one corner portion of the base of the plate adapted to secure said latch plate to said shank, a hoisting element secured to said latch plate at the other corner portion of its base and extending downwardly through the terminal eye, an offset projection or stop provided upon the latch plate, a hook portion formed upon said shank and provided with an eye adapted to receive said projection, a stop located upon said hoisting element, and an expansion spring disposed around the hoisting element intermediate said stop and terminal eye and adapted to exert pressure against said terminal eye and automatically move the plate to open or unlocking position when a bucket or other weight is removed from the hook, substantially as described.
4. In a hoisting hook the combination of a shank provided with a terminal eye at one end thereof, and a latch eye formed spaced from said terminal eye, a latch plate, a pin adapted to secure said latch plate to the latch eye, a hoisting element extending through the terminal eye and having connec tion with said latch plate at a point normally above the latch eye, a stop located upon said hoisting element, an expansion spring located around said hoisting element between said stop and said terminal eye, a projection located upon said latch plate, and a hook portion formed upon said shank provided with an eye adapted to receive said projection, substantially as described.
