COMPOSITION FOR CORE 0]? GAS-CHECK PADS.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GREGORY GERoo u, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Watervliet, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compositions for Cores of Gas-Check Pads, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in obturators for heavy ordnance which comprise a plastic core surrounded and inclosed by a metallic wire cloth; its object being to provide an improved composition for such core, and consists in the ingredients and method of compounding the same hereinafter claimed.
It is essential that in an article of this kind the plastic composition shall be of such character as to withstand without change or deterioration the greatest possible extremes of both heat and cold, which can occur under service conditions, so that it will never be solidified by cold or softened'by heat to interfere with perfect functioning in action.
My improved composition is made up of the following named ingredients: Chinese wood oil, (or tung oil), tallow, petroleum jelly and asbestos. These ingredients I compound in the following preferred manner. I take 10 pounds of tung oil and heat it to a temperature of about 400 F at which temperature it begins to jelly or thicken. At the same time I mix together tallow and petroleum jelly in the proportions of 14 pounds of tallow to 7 pounds of petroleum jelly and heat them to about 400 F.,' then mix and thoroughly stir them with the tung oil and allow to cool. I then take 35 pounds of finely shredded asbestos, and 16 pounds of the foregoing described mixture, heat to a temperature of about 250 F. and stir together until thoroughly and uniformly mingled. lVhen cold I force this material, preferably twice, through a hydraulic press with narrow vent openings, under a pressure of about 1000 pounds per square inch to reduce the mixture to a dense and homogeneous condition. As many batches as are necessary for the number of pads to be made are prepared as above described, all being then mixed together to secure uniformity, and again run through the press, and afterward through a meat chopper, or similar Specification of Letters Patent.

' machine, to break up the material into pieces a single pad is then weighed out and placed in a die and subjected to a pressure of about 2000 pounds per square inch, and then placed in its coverings, pressed and finished in the usual manner.
While my invention is designed primarily, and would usually be constructed, with a Wire cloth envelop, yet it is practicalto dispense entirely with an envelop, the composition being of such character that itwill make a thoroughly effective, practical and durable pad without any covering whatever. Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The improved composition of matter comprising tung oil, tallow, petroleum jelly and asbestos, in substantially the proportions of tung oil 10 pounds, tallow 14 pounds, petroleum jelly 7 pounds, asbestos 70 pounds.
2; The improved composition of matter comprising a mixture of tung oil, tallow and petroleum jelly, in substantially the proportions of 10 pounds of tung oil, 14 pounds of tallow, and 7 pounds of petroleum jelly, which have been heated to a temperature of about 400 F., and finely shredded asbestos in the proportion of about 35 pounds of asbestos to 16 pounds of said mixture.
3. The improved method of preparing a plastic core for obturators of breech loading ordnance, consisting in first separately heating to a temperature of about 400 F. and then combining in the following proportions, tung oil 10 pounds, tallow 14 pounds, petroleum jelly 7 pounds, and then mixing with this composition 35 pounds of finely shredded asbestos to 16 pounds of said composition at a temperature of about 250 F., then allowing the mass to become cold, and then mixing, compressing and shaping the same while cold into the desired form.
