NAIL-SET HAMMER.

Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented June 15, rare.
' Application filed August 3, 1914:. Serial No. 854,702.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD'G. Home, a citizen of the United States, resident of Springfield, in the county of Greene and tate of Missouri, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Nail-Set Hammers; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the in vention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference markedv thereon, which form a part of this specification.-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of, the hammer showing the nail. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the hammer with one spring plate removed. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the spring plates having the nail gripping jaw. Fig. 4: is a central longitudinal section of the hammer.
The invention has relation to improvements in nail set hammers adapted to grip the nail and to set the same in the work by a stroke of the hammer, and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the numeral 2 designates the hammer head, having the nail driver 3 at one end and the extracting claw a at the other end. lhe claw end of the hammer is provided with shallow lateral open-top and open-end recesses 5, 5, bounded at the inner ends by walls or shoulders 6, 6, and at the bottom by walls or shoulders 7, 7 and with an end open-top and open-end recess 8, bounded at the inside by a wall or shoulder 9 and at the bottom by a wall or shoulder 10, an open-top recess 11 leading into said end recess and having a bearing shoulder 11 in rear of its top opening.
Fitting in each lateralrecess, against the flat sides 12 thereof, is a spring plate 13, hearing at its inner end 14: against the shoulder 6, and at its bottom 15 against the shoulder 7, the spring plates having at their outer ends substantially triangular prismatic jaws 16, 16, projecting toward each other, closing the outer end of the recess 8 of the hammer head and provided at their -approximated ends with central toothed portions 17, 17, the teeth of which extend longitudinally bring the nail being adjacent to of the hammer head and are I designed to grip and hold the shank of a nail, shown at 18, so that upon a stroke of the hammer the nail will be set in the work.
The top edges of the spring plates and the outer or top edges'of the jaws are rounded to conform with the top surface of the claw end of the hammer head, which may thereby be rocked in the usual way upon its cam top surface in extracting a nail, the jaws 16, bearing at their inner sides 19, 19 against the shoulders 9, and at their bottoms against the shoulders 10 take the strain from the comparatively thin spring plates. Each spring plate has its inner edge It and its oblique bottom edge 15 preferably at an acute angle relation to each other and meet ing at an acute angle 21 and fitting closely against the inner and bottom shoulders of the lateral recess.
In operation, the nail shank is pressed into the top of the recess 11, against the rounded or beveled corners 16 of the jaws, to force said jaws apart, the jaws closing by inherent spring pressure to grip the nail shank by the toothed portions of the jaws, the teeth of said portions being in line with the nail. A stroke of the hammer will now head against the end wall of the top recess, beneath the shoulder 11; and at the same time will set the nail properly in the work. A slight tilt of the hammer now serves to release the nail from the jaws, the head of the nail taking a fulcrum bearing against the said shoulder 11. The nail is then driven home by reversing the hammer head and striking the nail with the nail driver end of the hammer.
It is designed in this device to adapt the nail setting device to the hammer without marked change in the conformation thereof or interference with the cam top surface of the head used in extracting nails, retaining also the well balanced character of the hammer head. The claw end of the hammer, the nail setting device, is in convenient position for the withdrawal of 7 an improperly set nail.
What I claim is:
1. A nail placer, comprising a hammer head having a claw end provided with a curved top surface, anend recess provided with bottom and inner walls, and a top recess leading into said end recess and having a bearing shoulder in rear of its top opening, spring plates secured to the sides of said claw end and having at the outer ends thereof toothed nail-gripping javvs projectmg toWard each other across the open end or sald end recess, sald Jaws bearlng against 7 the bottom and inner Walls of said end recess, and said spring plates and said jaws having top surfaces conforming to EtIlCllIl continuation or" the curve of the top surface:
' of the hammer.
2. A nail placer, comprising a hammer head having a claw end provided with a i said lateral recesses and secured to the sides of said claw end and having at' their outer ends substantiallytriangular prismatic toothed. nail -grip'ping jaws projecting toand said spring plates and said jaws having top surfaces conforming to and 1n continuhammer.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signatuie;
inpresence of two'w'itnesses. V v
