Description

H URWICK.
GLOVE.
APPLICATION FILED MAY29. 1912.
Patented June 15, 1915.
HENRY UIR/WICK, 0F WORCESTER, ENGLAND.
GLOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 115, 19115.
Application filed May 29, 1912. Serial No. 700,360.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY URWICK, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Talbot street, l/Vorcester, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gloves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gloves such as riding and driving gloves provided with outturned seams adapted to give a good grip.
Such seams are formed of four thicknessesof leather in the following special manner: The edges of the glove blank are turned outwardly and between them is placed a lengthwise-doubled strip the raw edges of which are inside and the relatively harder edge formed by the fold is outside and between the raw edges of the blank. All four thicknesses may be secured by a single line of stitching. Such a seam is relatively water tight and forms on the exterior of the glove a projecting seam both raw and folded outer portions of which coact to assure a 'nonslipping rein grip, and the lines of stitching joining the material at the seams are not directly exposed to frictional ripping wear by the reins, thus promoting durability of the glove, and the seam forming material does not project far enough within the glove to injure the drivers hand.
Figure 1 shows the palm side of a glove made according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2, 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section of one of the fingers on an enlarged scale. Fig l is a cross section through a glove finger showing an additional finger seam. Fig. 5 is a View on a reduced scale showing additional finger seams.
The seam a is a seam made in accordance with this invention whilethe seams b are ordinary seams. As is clearly shown at Fig. 3 each seam a consists of four thicknesses of leather. the outer two thicknesses being the edges of the leather 0 of which the glove is made while the other two are a doubled piece of leather d. The leather insert 03 projects but slightly beyond the edges of the leather 0, and is folded and stitched tight. The fold thus forms a hard durable gripping edge, projecting slightly beyond and coacting with the edges of the leather 0 to assure non-slipping rein grip.
As shown at Fig. 1 the seam a at the outer edge of the fore finger is continued along the middle of the inside of the thumb. Seams a can if desired be made in a similar manner by slitting the insides of the fingers but usually this is not necessary. Such a construction is shown in Fig. 4 at e.
I claim:
1. As an improved article of manufacture, a driving glove having on its palm side one or more out-turned seams each consisting of two out-turned raw edges of the glove material and a folded or doubled strip laid between said out-turned seam edges, and stitches joining the seam material at lines ranging inside or clear of the exposed edges of the seam, substantially as described, whereby the outer edges of the seams coact to assure a non-slipping rein grip and the seam securlng stitches are not exposed to wear by the reins, as herein set forth.
2. As an improved article of manufacture,
a driving glove having on its palm side one or more out-turned seams each consisting of two out-turned raw edges of the glove material and a folded or double strip laid between said out-turned seam edges with the raw edges of said strip at the inner face of the glove and the rounded strip fold' at the outer face of the glove, and stitches joining the seam material at lines ranging inside or clear of the exposededges of the seam, substantially as described, whereby both raw and folded outer edges of the seams coact to assure non-slipping rein grip and the seam securing stitches are not exposed to wear by the reins, and the seam forming material does not project far enough within the glove to injure the drivei"s hand, as herein set forth.
3. As an improved article of manufacture, a driving glove having on its palm side out turned gripping seams, one of said seams extending from the outer side of the forefinger to and along the front of the thumb.
4. As an improved article of manufacture, a driving glove having on its palm side outturned grippingseams, one of said seams extending from the outer side of the forefinger inside the thumb of the glove, one or more of said seams consisting of raw edges and a folded strip inserted between said edges. 1
5. As an improved article of manufacture, a driving glove having on its palm side outturned gripping seams, one of said seams extending from the outer side of the forefinger along the frontof the thumb of the 10 glove, one or more of said seams consisting I of raw edges and a folded strip inserted between said edges, the insert 7 projecting slightly beyond said edges. s HENRY URWICK.
