TABLE COVER. APPLICATION FILED JULY 2,1914.

THE NORRIS PETERS CO.,FHO1O LITHO., WASHINGTON, D Ci I j i SAMUEL lVL HOFIEBERG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TABLE-COVER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL M. HOFFBERG, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in 'Iable-Co'vers,
A further object of the invention is to provide in a table cover means for protecting the upper surface of the table top from heat or moisture and at the same time providing means for cushioning articles which may be 20 P laced upon the table.
A still further object of the invention is to provide in a covgr of the character indicated means whereby a protecting water-proof strip of material may be readily detached from the cover when it is desired to'wash the cover or for other purposes.
WVith the above objects in view the cover includes a layer of relatively thick material adapted to rest directly against the upper surface of the table top and provided with flanges of comparatively thin material secured thereto with draw stringsfor bring-. ing the edge portions of the said flanges to-' gether under the table top.
Retaining strips are connected at their edge portions with the edges of the said layer of material and the said retaining strips are connected together along the end portions of their inner edges but the intermediate portions of their inner edges are open and a strip or layer of water proof 7 material may be inserted through the said opening and positioned between the relatively thick layer of material and the said retaining strips.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure l is a perspective View of a table with the cover applied. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the cover. Fig. 3 is an under plan view of the cover. Fig. 4 is a detailed sectional view of a portion of the cover cut on the line H of Fig. 2. V
The cover comprises a layer of relatively thick material 1 as for instance canton flannel or felt and this layer of material is adapted to rest directly upon the upper Patented June 8, 1915. Application filed July 2, 1914. Serial N 0. 848,658; 7 i I surface of a table top. An outer flange 2 of if relativelythin material is securedat its edge to the edge 'of the-layer 1 and is provided at its inner edge with a loop 3 in whichis located a draw string4.
'An inner flange 5 of relatively thin, ma-
terial is secured to the intermediate portion of the layerl and is provided at'its inner edge with loops 6 in which is located a draw string 7.
' As illustrated inthe accompanying drawing the flange 2 is adapted to be passedunder' the edge portion of the top of a table when the cover is applied to a table top whichis elliptical in plan and the flange 5 is adapted.
to be passed under the edge portion, of a table top when the said top is circular in" plan. For instance if the table top cover is applied to a table top whichis circular in plan the flange 5 is passed "under the edge of the top and the draw string 7 is drawn fee tight whereby the said flange is drawn up under the lower surface of the table top.
The draw string 4 is then drawn tight whereby the outer portion of the layer 1 is drawn back under the table top. WVhen the cover is applied to a table top which is elliptically shaped as for instance that shown in Fig. 1 the flange 5 lies flat upon the upper surface of the table top and the flangefZ is passed under the edge of the table top and the draw string 4 is drawn whereby the said flange 2 is held up against. the under surface of the table top.
Retaining strips 8 are secured at their edges to the edge portions of the layer of -material 1 and the end portions of the inner edges of the said strip 8 are secured together as indicated at 9 in Fig. 2. The intermediate portions of the inner edges of the strips 8 are disconnected from each other as at 10 (see Fig. 2) and thus an opening is provided through which a flexible strip of water proof material 11 may be inserted and positioned upon the upper surface of the strip 1, and
, below the lower surfaces of the retaining strips 8.
In view of the fact that the strip 11 is flexible it will freely bend when the cover is applied to a table top which is circular. Inasmuch as the strip 11 is water proof it protects the top of the table from liquid or water which may be'spilled from dishes or other receptaclesplaced upon the table top and cover. Also the thicknesses of material and especially the layer 1 will protect the upper surface of the table top from the heat from hot dishes and so forth.
When it is desired to wa sh the"-coyer the strip 11 may be extracted from between the strips 1 and 8 through the opening ll'and after the cover has been Washed the said strip-11 maybe reinserted in the position between the last mentioned strip. Therefore it Will be seen that a table top cover of simple structure is provided and the-same may be used to advantage upon table tops of different shapes. Furthermore the parts are so arranged that the cover-maybe easily and readily detached from the table top' and When in position will; protect the top from moisture and heat.
vHaving described the invention What is claimed is A table top cover comprising a relativelythick layer of material, a plurality'offianges connected to the same at difi'erentdistances fordrawing the edges of the said flanges tow'vard -each other, retaining strips secured at their edge portions to the edges of the said "layenof relatively thick material said retaining strips being secured together at the end portions of their inner edges and disconnected: from each other at the intermediate portions of the inner edges thereby providing an opening and a strip of'Water proof material inse'rtible through said opening and adapted -tolie between the said layer of relatively' thick material andthe said retaining strips.
In testimony whereof I afiiX-my signature in presence-of two Witnesses.
