Description

W. ECCLES.
TURBINE.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 6. 1915.
Patented June 8, 191 5.
IN VE N TOR.
HIS ATTORNEY IN FACT THE NORRIS PETERS co V-ASHIN WILLIAM ECCLES, 0F CHORL'IQN -GU1VI-HARDY, ENGLAND.
TURBINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM .EOOLES, a
subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Chorlton-cum- Hardy, in the county of Lancaster, England, have made a new and useful Invention in Turbines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to steam turbines of the kind in which a plurality of inlet nozzles are provided, some of which, hereinafter termed ordinary nozzles, can supply suflicient steam to enable the turbine to deal,
with ordinary loads while it is necessary that steam should be supplied through the remaining nozzles hereinafter termed overloadnozzles when the load on the turbine is above the normal. It is a common practice with turbines of this type to provide two valves, one controlling the supply of steam to the ordinary nozzles and the other controlling the supply of steam to the overload nozzles, the total steam supply being controlled by a suitable throttle valve operated by the'turbine governor in accordance with the load. In some instances both the'nozzle control valves are arranged to be operated by the governor in accordance with the speed, but in other cases the'overload valve is arranged to be opened and closed by hand. Where during long periods of time the load on the turbine is normal or less than normal or full load the steam consumption can be considerably improved by closing an additional or overload control valve, but if during such periods the load is liable to suddenly rise the attendant is afraid to close the valve in case a sudden overload should come on during his absence without giving time for the valve to be opened. This disadvantage isobviated where the overload control valve .is operated by the governor in accordance with the speed, but the connection-ofthe valve-tothe governor is often difiicult and expensive to construct and in some cases'the efliciency of the turbine at certain overloads maybe seriously 7 impaired.
According to the present invention automatic power operated means are provlded Specification of Letters Patent.

for suddenly and fully opening an additional steam supply valve such as the-over- '7 load or full load valve ifthe-load increases means being either oil under pressure or or a spring. Thispower means is brought suddenly and quickly into action by a trigger arrangement when the governor ,beyond the-normal, said poweroperat ed may be clearly understood, it will now be described with reference tothe accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is, a view somewhat diagrammatlc, showing the general arrangement of a turbine with an additional or. overload supply valve operated in accordance with the present invention; ,Fig. '2 is a view drawn to an enlargedscale showing more clearly the connections between the turbine governor and the overload valve.
is a sectional view on the line IIIIII Fig.
2,showing the operated means for theoveris indicated at 1,the governor 2 of which is inclosed within casing 3 and operates a sleeve 4 :in the usual way I in response to variations in the speed of theturbine. The
Fig. 3 V
sleeve 4 transmits its movement th gh lay: lever 5 pivoted at afixedpoint 6 and a link Keyed to the shaft 9lis anarm 10, and loosely mounted 11, having on one arm a projection 12, with :on said shaft is a two-armed trigged lever which thearmlOis adapted in certain po-, I
sitions to engage, and the other arm of whichis provided witha notch,13, adapted to engage with atrip arm 14 keyed on a shaft 15. The shaft15 haskeyedi thereon an arm 16,which'is connected by a link 17 to one end of a lever'l8 pii'foted at afi xed point end of the cylinder is provided with a port 26 through which oil or other fluid under pressure can be admitted and released in accordance with the movement of the valve 20. The fluid under pressure is supplied through the pipe 27 and is exhausted through the pipe 28.
The operation of the device is as follows:
So long as the load remains at or below normal the movement of the arm 10, occasioned by the movement of the governor sleeve 4, will never be suflicient to cause the arm 10 to engage with the projection 12 on the trigger lever 11, but when the load exceeds the normal and the amount of steam supplied through the normal load nozzles is insuflicient to maintain the turbine at the proper speed the sleeve 4 will cause the arm 7 10 to move sufliciently far to engage the projection 12 and mov'e'the trigger'lever 11 so as to disengage the arm 14 from the notch 13 whereupon said arm 13 will be moved under the influence of gravity or of a spring 29 and rotate the shaft 15. The rotation of said shaft, through the agency of the arm 16, link 17 and lever 18, will move the valve 20 in such a direction as to admit fluid under pressure from the pipe 27 through port 26 into the cylinder 24. thereupon quickly and fully opening the control valve 21. Steam will thus be supplied to the additional or overload nozzles to enable the turbine to take up the increase of load. Excessive movement of the arm 16 may be prevented by a suitable stop 30 if desired. Closure of the valve 21 when necessary may be brought about byforcing the arm 16 away from the stop 30 thereby moving the valve 20 so as to open the cylinder 24: to the eX- haust pipe 28 whereupon the spring 25 acting on the piston 23 will close the additional or overload valve and cut off the steam to the overload nozzles. The arm 14: will also be reengag'ed with the notch 13 of the trigger lever 11 and be held in position to be operated when the load again increases above the normal.
The invention is obviously also'applicable to apparatus in which the supply of steam to the overload nozzles is controlled by some form of nozzle cutout instead of by a valve such as illustrated.
. comprising It will be observed that in the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the valve 21 which controls the supply of fluid under pressure to the cylinder 2a is located in close proximity to said cylinder and in such a case instead of'operating the piston 23 by fluid under pressure the lever 18 may be arranged to operate a retaining catch for the piston 23 adapted to be actuated by a spring to open the valve 21 without the intervention of any fluid under pressure. The fluid operated device has, however, the advantage that if the additional or overload valve or nozzle cutout is arranged as apart of the turbine which is not easily accessible only a simple pipe connection from the cylinder 24.- to the chamber containing the valve 20 governing the supply of fluid to saidchamber is required, thus rendering the device easy of application.
It will beunderstood that the expression overload hereinabove employed does not necessarily mean loads above full load, as in some cases the normal load is' less than full load. For this reason the words additional supply valve are employed as an alternative to overload valve. Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and inwhat manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is:
1. In combination with a quick opening overload valve for turbines, a motor for actuating said valve, and governor controlled mechanism for controlling the operation of said motor, comprising a governor actuated member, a trip mechanism controlled by said member, and means released by said trip mechanism for controlling said motor to open said valve.
2. In combination with a quick opening turbine valve, a motor for actuating said valve, and a governor controlled mechanism for controlling the operation ofsaid motor, a governor actuated member, a trigger member actuated by said governor actuated member when the governor actuated member is moved to a determined position, and a member held in an inoperative position by said trigger member, and dis-,
engaged therefrom when said trigger mem her is actuated by said governor actuated member, and means actuated by said last mentioned member for causing said motor to open said valve.
3. In combination with a quick opening turbine valve, apressure actuated motor for opening said valve, and governor controlled mechanism for controlling the operation of said motor, comprising a governor actuated member, a trigger lever adapted to be engaged and actuated by saidmember when said member ismoved to a determined position, a trip arm normally held in an inopera- In testimony whereof, I have signed my tive position by said lever and adapted to be name to this specification in the presence disengaged from said lever when, said lever of two subscribing Witnesses.
is actuated by said member, a valve for de- WILLIAM ECOLES. livering actuating fluid to said motor, and means actuated by said trip lever for actuating said valve.
