To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, EDWIN C. WORNS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rutherford, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Tool, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved tool adapted to be employed as a scraper, or an ironing tool by furriers, for scraping the fat from the furs, and for ironing down a seam, in order to perform operations now requiring a scraper and aseparate ironing device.

It is a further design of my invention to provide a more efficient scraper for use by furriers, and furthermore, to provide a tool adapted for general use as a scraper by paper hangers, for removing paper from the walls, and for other purposes.

The invention will be particularly explained in the specific description following.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in whichv similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tool embodying my invention; showing the same in position for use; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the tool; and Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section.

The improved tool comprises a body 10, adapted to be grasped in the hand of the user, and consists of a top 12, a bottom 11, a back 13, and a blade 14. The ends of the device are preferably closed as indicated at 10*. The body has a width to extend at least the full width of the hand of the user, with the back or rear end 13 pressed firmly against the palm of the hand, with the thumb on the under side against the body 11, and the four fingers gripping the top 12.

The bottom 11 presents a straight flat surface, while the top 12 inclines forwardly from the rear thickened end of the body to the front and is curved longitudinally. The

back 13 is rounded, curves vertically and merges in rounding lines into the bottom and top. The blade 14 may be inserted between the top and bottom of the body, the body being made preferably of copper or other sheet metal, that it may not absorb acids used by furriers. The blade is rigid, extends transversely the full width of the body at the front end, and has a blunt edge. Prefer- Specification of Letters Patent.

By the described form the tool can be held in the hand and operated without cramping the fingers, the fiat under side being sufficient for firm gripping by the thumb, while the curved and downwardly inclinedtop affords the necessary resistance to any tendency of the fingers to slide rearwardly in the firm gripping of the tool. 7

By confining the forward dip or incline to the top, leaving the bottom straight and.

flat, the body is preserved of substantial thiclmess, which lessens the tendency of the fingers to be cramped in order to effect a firm grip, the curvature, desirable and important for the gripping of the fingers, not being required at the bottom, since the engagement of the thumb with the bottom is largely a direct vertical pressure, while on the other hand, the fingers in gripping will have a tendency to slip backward and become cramped, the tendency being obviated by the described formation of the top.

In using the device for instance by a furrier, the tool is tilted upward-at a suflicient angle to the table on which the piece of fur is spread, to cause the lower angle of the blunt edge of the blade to have the desired scraping action. A similar position will be given the tool when scraping wall paper, a butchers block, or the like.

In ironinglor smoothing down a seam in a piece of fur, or a skin, the tool is brought with the bottom surface more nearly parallel front edge enabling it to successfully iron down the seam without employing a special iron as at present in addition to the scraper.

It is to be understood that the sides 10 of the body are closed, the sides serving to brace the topand bottom against fiexion.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A tool of thekind described, consisting of a sheet metal body thickened vertically at its'rear end, and decreasing in thickness to the front end, the body at the back being broad to extend substantially the full width of the hand of the user, and of decreasing width toward the front, the rear end being rounded Vertically and merging in curved lines with the top and bottom, the said top and bottom presenting broad surfaces eX- tending from the front to the back end and the top being concaved longitudinally and inclining toward the bottom from rear to front, the concaved top presenting a gradual curve extending from the rounded back to near the front end; there being a rigid blade ranging across the front end of the body at the juncture of the top and bottom and directly secured to the body between the sheet metal top and bottom.

2. A tool of the kind described, consisting of a body thickened vertically at its rear end and decreasing in thickness at the front end, the body at the back being broad to extend substantially the full width of the hand of the user, the rear end ofthe body being rounded vertically and adapted to bear against the palm of the, hand, the top and bottom presenting broad surfaces extending from the front to the back end, and the top EDWIN C.
