COW-STALL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 8, 1915.
Application filed June 16, 1914. Serial No. 845,455.
To. all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, RALPH GAGAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Oconomowoc, in the county of Waukesha and State of l/Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cow-Stalls, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a stall and has special reference tostalls which are particularly used for cows and which are so formed as to be provided with an extension to constitute a substantial box stall for each cow if so desired.
Another object of this invention is the production of a stall having an extension frame which is adapted toslide so as to form a substantial box stall but which may be moved to a closed position so as to allow a person to have easy access to the cow when so desired.
Still another object of this invention is the production of a cow stall having an extension frame which is provided with a simple and efficient lockingmeans for holding the extension in an extended position when desired.
With these and other objects in View this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a detailed perspective view of a plurality of stalls illustrating the manner in which the device may be used. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section through one of the stall members showing the frame in an extended position. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detailed perspective view of a portion of one of the stall members showing the locking means used for holding the extension frame in an extended position. Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 44 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detailed perspective view of the extension frame.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals it will be seen that the stall members are used in connection with an ordinary barn having the side wall 1 and floor 2. The stationary portion of the stall member comprises the parallel hollow tubes 3 and 4. The inner ends of these hollow tubes are threaded into engagement with the threaded necks 5 which are secured to the anchor plates 6. The screws 7 pass through the anchor plates 6 for fixedly retaining the same upon the wall 1 thereby holding the inner ends of the tubes 3 and 4 in their correct positions; The outer ends of the tubes 3 and 4 are threaded into engagement with the T-joints 8 while a short pipe 9 holds the T-joints in their correct spaced relation since the short pipe 9 is threaded into engagement with the T-joints 8. A secondary short pipe 10 is threaded into engagement with the lower T-joint 8 and is also attached to the collar 5 Which is formed integral upon the plate 6 which plate 6 is held fixedly upon the floor 2 by means of the screws or other suitable securing means 7. The lower T- joint 8 is also provided with an aperture 11 formed in alinement with the hollow tube 4 while the upper T-joint 8 has one end portion thereof open so as to be positioned in alinement withthe interior of the hollow tube 3. A number of the stationary frames as above described are adapted to be positioned in spaced relation to each other to form a short stall as disclosed clearly in Fig. 1.
In order to provide means in combination with the stationary frames to constitute a substantial box stall so as to prevent the cows from moving around into the next adjacent stall, there are provided a plurality of extension frames. Each extension frame comprises a bridge 12 having parallel side arms 13 formed integral thereon to form a substantial U-shaped frame, and one of the arms 13 is provided with a plurality of notches 14. The arms 13 pass through the T-joints 8 so as to allow one of the arms to pass through the aperture 11 both arms extending into the hollow tubes 3 and 5. Since the arms 13 fit snugly within the tubes 3 and 4 the extension frame may easily slide to a closed position as illustrated in Fig. 1 or may be extended as shown in Fig. 2 to abut against or be adjacent the opposite wall of the barn and thereby form a substantial box stall. If desired the extension may be moved slightly inwardly as shown in Fig. 1 so as to allow a person to pass therearound. When it is desired to milk the cow the extension frame may be moved to its innermost position so that a person may have free access to the cow without interference from the extension frame.
By referring to Fig. 3 it will be seen that a simple and eflicient latch has been pro duced for holding the extension frame in an extended position. This latch comprises a plate 15 having rivets 16 or other suitable securing means for holding the same fixedly upon the lower T-joint 8. The latch finger 17 is pivotally secured to the integral lugs 18 of the plate 15 and is normally held in positionby the flat spring 19 carried by the plate 15. This finger l7 alsov carries an integral nob 20 for allowing .the same to be easily swung to an inoperative position when desired. The end of this finger 17 is adapted to fit within one of the notches 14: formed in one of the arms 13 of the extensionframe for preventing the frame from accidentally moving to a closed position. Owing to the fact that the frame is provided with a number of notches lt formed in one arm 13 of the extension frame, the frame may be easily held in an adjusted position as disclosed clearly in Fig. 1.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a simple and efiicient cow stall has been produced Which is provided with a when desired.
What I claim is 1. A stall of the class described compris ing a plurality of parallel hollow tubes,
collars carried upon the inner ends of said tubes and being adapted to be fixedly secured to a support, T-joints carried upon the outer ends of said tubes, short pipes connecting said T-joints and extending to support said tubes, a U-shaped extension frame slid-V ably mounted within said tubes, said extension frame being adapted to be moved to an extended position for forming an enlarged stall or to be moved to a closed position for reducing the size of the stall and means carried by one of said T-joints and engaging said extension frame for holding'the same in an extending position.
2. A stall of the class described comprising a stationary frame, a U-shaped extension frame slidably mounted upon said stationary frame, said U-shaped extension frame provided with notches, a spring ac- 1 tuated latch carried by said stationary frame, said extension frame being adapted to be moved to an extended position for forming an enlarged stall or to be closed for reducing the size of the stall, said spring I i actuated latch being adapted to fit within one of said notches when the extension frame is extended for preventing the extension Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
