WINDOW-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed February 9, 1915. Serial No. 7,055.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT'D.- SHUMATE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spray,'in the county of Rockingham and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Window-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to window locks and has for its primary object the provision of a structure wherein the sash can be locked in any of its adjusted positions and at the same time held from inward or outward movement.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a structure wherein the catch can be stamped from sheet metal and so arranged as to have one of its extremities secured to the window sash and its opposite extremity frictionally engaging the window frame.
The invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates;
a window frame in which are slidably mount edupper and lower sashes 2 and 3. Secured to the window frame 1 and lying in parallelism with the window sashes, is a bar 4. having a vertical series of notches 5 formed therein Secured'to the sashes are catches 6 and 7.
Owing to the difference in distance between portion 8 of the upper catch is longer than the body portion 9 of the lower catch. Each of the catches is formed from a metallic strip and so shaped as to have right angularly bent extremities 10 and 11, the extremity 10 being rigidly secured to the sash while the extremity 11 frictionally engages Que side of the window frame. The extremity 10 at its juncture with the body portion is reduced and deflected to one side as shownat 12 so as to cojiperate with the ver- Fig. 2 is a horizontal section theretioal edge ofthe rack bar for a purpose hereinafter described.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that the notched bar 4 is so arranged and of a suificient length to cooperate with both catches thus doing away with having an individual bar for each sash.
When the body portion of the catch is resiliently bent to one side through pressure being applied to the extremity 11, the win dow frame is free to move to one of its adjusted positions. As soon as the wlndow sash reaches its adjusted position the body portion can resiliently engage one of the notches when the extremity 11 is relieved of the pressure applied thereto. When the catch is in looking position, the deflected portion 12 cooperates with one of the vertical edges 13 for preventing inward movement of the sashes while the extremity 11 cooperates with one side of the frame for preventing outward movement of the sashes,
thus the sashes are held against movement in any direction for'preventing-the entrance of an'unauthorize'd person. What is clalmed is:
1. In combination, a frame, a pair of sashes slidable therein, a notched bar secured to the frame and lying parallel to both sashes. and catches secured to said sashes and adapted to cooperate with said notched bar, each catch having its body portion 00- operating with said notched bar and its extremities engaging one of the window sashes and one side of the frame respectively.
2. In combination, a frame, a pair of sashes slidable therein, a notched bar secured to the frame and lyirr parallel to both sashes, and catches secured o'said sashes and adapted to cooperate with said notched bar, each catch comprising a resilient strip bent to have a body portion and right angular bent ex; tremities, one of which is secured to the Mndow sash and'the other frictionally engages the frame, the said bodyportion being adapted to resiliently engage the notches n said bar for holding the sash in its ad usted position. 3. In combination, aframe, a palr of sashes slidable therein, a notched bar secured to the frame and lying parallel to both sashes, and catches secured to .said sashes and adapted to cooperate with said notched bar, each catch having its body portion cooperating with said notched bar and its extremitiesengaging one of the window sashes and one side of the frame respectively, one of the extremities at its juncture'with the body portion being deflected so as to cooperate-with one edge of said notched bar. 10
