To'all whom it 00mm: 4
Be it known that I, LUTHER O. TiioMPsoN',
a citizen of the United States, and' a resident of the city of Washington, District ofColumbia, formerly of Baltimore, .Maryland,v have invented a new and Improved Thrust- Bearing Journal-Box, of which thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description,
that will enable those skilled in the art to traction cars or motor cars, including any and all kinds of trucks that are propelled by steam or electric power.
- said box and to thereby reduce the shearing My object is to provide an improved thrust-bearing journal box and by this means to cushion the centrifugal force of the car when passing aroun curves, and thereby check vibration when and where 'it originates. This journal-box is journaled on'the axle, and compression springs are interposed in said'box and are also substantially connected in union, supporting the box on the axle, permitting the box'to re-fi I ciprocate on the axle in a mannerv to compress the said cushion springs and thereby check any side thrust of the car.
Another object in view is to I provide yielding supports for the axle .journal in cut of the wheel flanges on the rails when passing around the curves of the road, thereby overcoming the compound wheel friction of resistance and economizing in motive power at the curves of the road. The reciprocating movements of the journalboxes onthe axles compress the'springs, offering a yielding cushion sup ort, during the side thrust of the car and its load, and

I this means, the force of the blows'at the side ofthe rails and on the wheel-flanges,
are checked, thus, affording means of govand permitting of v Figure 1 is a longitudinal side elevation.
Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal cross section. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the rear of box. Fig. -5 is a face view of the cross bar.
. The springs 8. 8 are inserted in the channels A. A. of box 10, and the draw-bars F. F. are also inserted in the compression springs 8. 8. and they pass through the lugs G. G. and are rigidly connected with cross-bars 15 at 10%10%.
The heads T. T. rest on one end of springs 8. 8. that are inter osed between said heads T. T. and lugs G. axle journal 11)) hit5ving a central support on the cross- All parts are connected in box 10 in a i manner to check the momentum of any side thrust of the car and its load, as herein set forth.
Having thus described my invention, what claim as i new in thrust-bearing journal boxes, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is y- In. a thrust-bearing, the combination of a ournal-box having lugs near one end thereof, an axle, a bar extending across the end of the axle, drawbars attached to the crossbar at one end, and having heads at the 0pposite ends, the draw-bars passing through said lugs, and compression springs surrounding the draw-bars between said heads and said lugs, all for the pur ose set forth.
