To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE GARDNER, subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Meaden street, South Melbourne, in the State of Victoria, Australia, canistermaker, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Lids, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cylindrical tin boxes, such for instance, as those used to contain boot or floor polish, pharmaceutical commodities and the like the character of the contents of which, in order to prevent their deterioration, are such as require a container as airtight as possible. For this reason the lid must fit sufficiently securely to prevent it becoming loose in handling or transport and as a result the lid is pressed too firmly for easy removal.
Means have been provided on tin containers of this kind such as finger or thumb V grips or recesses but such are inadequate for the purpose, as it is almost impossible in some cases to obtain the desired grip and leverage.
Accordingly this invention consists of projecting means or protuberances provided on the lid above the contacting parts of the lid and body and adapted to be struck by a suitable tool or article for the purpose of forcibly disengaging the lid.
The invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, whereof Figure 1 is a vertical section through a tin box illustrating one embodiment of the invention, and Fig. 2 a plan thereof; Figs. 3 and 4L are similar views to Figs. 1 and 2. illustrating a modification; Figs. 5 and 6 are similar views to Figs. 1 and 2 illustrating another embodiment of the invention, and Fig. 7 a plan View illustrating a modification. 1
According to the embodiment of the invention as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the lid is provided with a circumferential projection or flange 2 formed by bending inwardly as at 3 the side 4: of the lid at the top of same. In lieu of the circumferential projection a series of independent indentations 5 may be formed in the side of the lid at the top so as to form a series of projections 52 3 and 1.
According to further embodiments of the invention as illustrated in Figs. 5, 6 and 7, a circumferential embossment 2 may be pro- Vided on the side of the lid at the top thereof as in Fig. 7 or a series of embossments 2 may be formed on the lid for the same purpose.
The projection embossment or projections and embossments on the lid are adapted to be struck by any suitable tool instrument or other convenient article for the purpose of forcibly disengaging the lid.
It will be readily understood that with this arrangement it is unnecessary to make indentations in the upper edge of the body portion of the tin box to correspond with those on the lid as these latter are formed above the contacting parts of the lid and body, and consequently the lids may be simply forced on in any position and not only in certain set circumferential positions as heretofore. In order that the indentations of the lid may not engage the upper edge of the body and become deformed or the indentations deform said upper edge, by contact therewith, an inwardly projecting flange is formed in the side of the body to engage the lower edge of the lid and limit the downward movement of the latter. The portion of the side above the flange converges to con form to the side of the top which diverges from inside the circumferential projection 2 or the projections 2 which do not extend beyond the periphery of the body as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3. This feature pre sents advantage in packing as the projections do not take up space as is the case where the projections extend beyond the body of the box and the lids are not liable to be knocked oil" as in other structures.
