Specification of Letters Latent.
Patented June I, 1915.
Application filed June 24, 1910. Serial No. 568,748.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED S. RIoKnRD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clips, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to clips for securing springs and other members of spring seat constructions or the like together, and especially to an arrangement thereof whereby the clip, when once applied, is positively locked, thereby preventing accidental displacement.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a clip that embodies features of the invention, showing the clip applied. Figs. 2 and 3 are views in detail of the clip.
As shown in the drawings, the clip consists of a strip of metal, a rod or wire, having a body 1 whose end portions are bent into closed eyelets 2, lying in substantially parallel planes transverse to the body. The ends 3 of the strip overlap the inner sides of the eyelets at the bends or in the corners between the loops and the body 1, and they are retained there by a lateral offset indicated at 4: in the body which extends toward or between the loops or eyelets. This prevents the ends of the eyelets from bending inwardly and consequently the clip cannot work loose. The clip is readily closed by the single application of a pair of pliers or other like implement. Because of the low cost of the material of which it consists, there being no special tools required to make the blanks from which it is bent up, and because of the saving in time in securing it, while clips heretofore used require three or four operations to secure them, there is a great economy in its use in large quantities in spring construction. Furthermore, as it is securely looped when in place, it is more efiicient than clips hitherto made.
What I claim as my invention is The combination with a pair of contiguous rods having divergent end portions, of a clip for securing them together comprising a round metal bar bent near its ends to form arms that lie in substantially parallel planes transverse to the general plane of the intermediate connecting portion, the arms being folded on themselves to form eyelets each embracing the contiguous rods between the divergent end portions, the extremities of the arms overlapping the loops of the eyelets at the bonds between the loops and the intermediate connecting portion and abutting the concave sides of the bends, the connecting portion of the clip bar between the eyelets being curved inwardly between the eyelets to a point beyond the line connecting the extremities of the arms and cooperating with the inclosed portions of the rods to form a lock for retaining the overlapping extremities from movement toward each other.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRED S. RICKERD.
