Description
' YJosera s.

Letters Patent No. 114,002, dated April 25,1871'.
IMPROVEMENT IN AT'IACHMEN l'S-OF REVOLVING MOLDBORDS PLOWS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sama.
To all whom it nung/ ,concefrn Beit known that I, Josn'rn S. GoDFRnY, of Rochester, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Attachments for Revolving Mold-Board Flows and I do hereby1 declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference beling had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specilication, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a revolving moldboard plow illustrative, in part, of' .my improvement; Figure is a vertical sectional view of the4 moldboard, circular scraper, and showing, in part,'the devices by which th'ey are connected to the plow-beam .Figure 3 is a perspective View of thesame devices; and v Figure 4 is a front elevation of the devices of fig. 3. Like letters of reference indicate like parts in each. My improvement relates to that class ofplows commonly known as revolving mold-board plows, and consists in the construction of an improved scraper to opcrate in connection therewith, and of improved devices by which the revolving mold-board is adj ustably connected with the fixed parts of the plow.
'o enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I wili proceed to describe its construction and inode of operation.
The plowbeam l), handles h, ponit p, shin-piece p', and revolving mold-board m are of the usual or any known construction.
The mold-board may either be flator have a concave working-thee.
Thev spindle a, by which the mold-board m is car` riad, tits with its finward end neatly into a cylindrical socket, c, and is held therein-by means of a headed screw-holt, a', which screws into the end oi' the spindle c, and the head of which overlaps the end of the spindie and plays in a recess in theend vof the socket c, as shown. i l
rlhe socket c is ilanged ont at its forward end, as at c', so as to give a body into which to insert the screws c, by which the moldeboard mis fastened. It will now he seen that the mold-board will be at liberty, along with the socket c, to which it is attached, to turn freely, and, at the same time, it is, by `the head of the bolt a', prevented from coming oli'. In this way the 'searing end or surface is keptl'rce from dirt.
In practical use it is often desirable to be able to adjust the mold-board m in 4and ont, up and down, and also angnlarly, so that its'working-i'ace may, in any desired part, make any desired angle with the direc-, tion-of the furrow-slice when it strikes or leaves the mold-board. As one means for providing for such an'- gular adjustment I make a slight crook or bend, asat a", in the spindle a, at any desired point at the base ond of the socket c, or between it and the eye e, or other device by which a connection is made -to some fixed pait of the plow. not be large, and for most purposes need not exceed one or two degrees, though' in this respect I do not conne myself to any fixed limit. l,
A plate, d, made as presently to be described, is attached to the extension b of the plow-beam i), and Y from it apost, d', extends down any-desired distance. This post has a vertical slot, le'. On either, but preferably its rear face is a saddle-piece, having a seat, o6 curved or other appropriate shape, for seating the spindle a, where it is secured by means of auV eye, e,
the stem of which projects through an apertureV in the l. saddle g. through the slot e', and is secured as tightly as may be necessary by means of a nut, t. l On looseningr this nut i the stein of the eye e may be moved up and downin the slot e' and the moldboard m be adjusted at pleasurenot only up and down along with the eye e, but also in and out, by its spindle a. passing through the eye e.
The better to keep the saddle-piece g iuplace a lug, A
the slot c'.
g', on each end, may project into l as to provide for the The plate d is so constructed angular adj nstment in a board m. For this purpose it has a curved slot, s, made with a radius equal or about equal to the horizontal distance from it to the forward edge of the mold-board on, and at itsrear end isa series of holes, s.
The plate d is secured to the beamxtension b by a headed bolt and nut, n, by which also provision is made for adjustment at the forward-end, while, to hold tlie'rear end in-placc at any desired point of adj ust ment, a pin, n', passes through the beam-extension and through one of the holes, s'.
If so preferred, the slot s and `holes s' may change places, it not being important in which end either is made; also, thc slot may be dispensed with, the bolt n pass through a hole in theV plate to hold it in place, and the plate be adjusted from that as a pivoting-point by moans of the holes s and pin 'a'. In like-manner, lugsaod notches may take the place of the holes s.
In connection with revolving mold-boards a scraper has been used, which consisted of a bladecxtcnding half-way across 'the face of the mold-board. I have devised and combined with a revolving dat or concavefacedmold-board a circular revolving scraper, f. This may be made in any desired way, either of a circular. dat, or concave-convex disk, brought to an edge, r of a circular blade, connected by spokes. to a central hub or bearing., or rh other desired way. In any case it is so combined with tlj'e revolving edge shall operate against or near to that partof the mold-board which requires cleaning. It is supported in any suitable way by a bracket, 7i', extending to the l 'Y The angle at this bend need horizontal plane of the moldmold-board that itsA 114,602 2 saddle g., -n t'o othe parl; of the plqw ,or its apnaciand in combintio therewith,l substntinllyas dements.
