Description

C. PESSARRA. COMBINED COUCH AND BED.
APPLICATION FILED APR.22,1914
L pg@ Datentd May 11, 1915.
uw 5MM (ma s. WWW y @MMM CONRAD PESSARRA, OF SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINED COUCI-I AND BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11, 1915.
Application filed April 22, 1914. Serial No. 833,630.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CONRAD PEssARRA, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Couches and Beds, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a couch, more particularly in the form of a davenport, which is readily converted into a bed of full size, and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a couch in the form of a davenport which is neat in appearance, shape and style, which is readily convertible into a bed of full width forming a comfortable bed to sleep upon; second, to provide such a device that is simple, durable, economical of construction, easy of operation, sanitary and substantial; and third, to provide such a device in which some of the parts are automatic with the operation of changing the couch into a bed and the bed into a couch.
I/Vith these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device complete, shown in the form of a davenport couch; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same shown in the position of a bed, and Fig. 3 is a detailed view showing the operation of one of the supports.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The end pieces 1, longitudinal support 2, cushion 3, hinged member 1, hinged member 5, movable part 6, cushion 7, supports 8, and drawers 9, constitute the principal parts of my device.
The end members l provide supports for the structure. They are each provided with a notch la in their top surface, the back end 1b of which is slightly beveled to permit the radial movement of the movable piece 6 therein. These end pieces 1 are connected by means of the horizontal connecting piece 2 which is provided in its front surface with two drawers 9. These drawers are for the purpose of storing the bed clothes when the device is used for a couch or davenport. In the upper surface of this support 2 is a recess into which is mounted the cushion 3. On the upper surface of the end pieces 1, adjacent to the notches 1a are hinged by means of hinges ta, the hinged members 4 on the opposite end of which are hinged, by means of the hinges 5a, the hinged members 5. These hinged members 5 are rigidly secured to the movable piece 6 as shown best in Fig. 2. This movable piece 6 is provided with a recess into which is securely mounted the cushion 7. In the one side of the movable piece 6 is provided two iron pegs 6L rigidly secured thereto, and in the edges of the end pieces l are provided holes 1C adapted for the insertion of the pegs 6a when the movable piece 6 is in the position shown in Fig. 2, thus supporting the movable piece 6 relatively to the end members l. In the ends of the movable piece 6 are slidably mounted the leg members 8, one in each end, which are adapted to support the outer side of the movable piece 6 when in the position shown in Fig. 2, but to drop back out of sight therein when the movable piece 6 is moved to the position shown in Fig. 1. This leg member 8 is held in position for supporting the movable piece 6 by means of a ball 6b in a race 6C. This ball, when the movable piece 6 is in the position shown in Fig. 2, drops down to the end of the race on top of the leg member 8 which is provided with a concave surface in the end of said piece 8, holding it in position. When the movable piece 6 is turned upward, however, the ball drops to the other end of the ball race 6c and the leg member will drop back into the ends of the movable piece 6, and when the piece is moved to its proper position the ball will again drop down to the opposite end of the race and hold it therein.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts, I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement, but desire to include in the purview of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement, substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
It is obvious that with this construction there is provided a couch of the davenport type which is readily convertible into a full sized bed by simply turning the movable piece 6 on the hinged members 4c and 5 to the position shown in Fig. 2; that the leg members 8 will automatically drop into position for supporting the piece and the pegs 6a will enter the holes in the edges of the members l, thus providing substantial supports for the movable piece 6; that each of the parts are provided with recesses adapted for cushions or mattresses; that the drawers in the stationary part provide a storage for the bed clothing when the device is'used as a couch; that the. device is simple 'of construction, durable, easily operated,
sanitary, and provides a good and substantial full sized bed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l In a combined couchv and bed the combination ofa stationary part provided with a recess in the upper portion thereof, a cushion removably mounted in said recess, a movable part adapted to be moved from a vertical to a horizontal position on one side of said stationary part and two members hinged together at their ends, one secured to each of said parts for supporting said removable part in said horizontal position.
2.7In a combined couch and bed the combination of a stationary part provided with a cushion in its upper portion, 'a movable part adapted to be moved from a vertical to a lhorizontal position and from the horizontal position to the vertical position, mem bers secured to said stationary part and said movable part hinged together for supporting said movable part in horizontal position beside said stationary part, and on the upper surface of the ends of said stationary part when in a vertical position.
3. In a combined couch and bed the combination of a stationary part provided with notches in the upper surface of its ends, a cushion removably mounted in the upper Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the portion of said stationary part, a member hinged on the upper surface of each end of said stationary part, a removable part, a cushion secured thereto, a member secured to the upper surface of said movable part when ina horizontal position, and mounted pivotally on the free end of each of saidV members hinged to the upper surface of the ends of said stationary part,A and other means for supporting said movable vpart when in a horizontal position mounted therein. f
4c. In a combined couchand Vbed the combination of a 'stationary part provided with a cushion in a. recess in its upper surface and with a notch in each ofits ends, acushioned movable part secured to said station# ary part,"hinged members so arranged that said movable part may rest in said notchesY tical position or be supported in ahorizon tal position adjacent to said stationary part and automatic means for supporting said movable part relatively to said stationary part when in a horizontal position.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name in thepresence of two subscribing witnesses.
