To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MAX KUMMER, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Herrnhut, Saxony, German Empire, have invented a new and Improved Document- File, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a file or binder for documents, loose-leaf sheets, etc., which is so constructed that a number of the sheets may be readily separated from those remaining on file, and that the sheets thus segregated will be firmly held together.

In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a document file embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a section on line A-B, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a section on line C--D, Fig. 2; Fig. 4 a plan of part of the file; Fig. 5 a longitudinal section of a modification; Fig. 6 a plan of Fig. 5; Fig. 7, an end view of a further modification, and Fig. 8 a plan of Fig. 7.

The device comprises essentlally a pair ofhooks or bow-shaped members 0, hinged at a to one of the covers M of the file. These hooks are adapted to be swung with their beaks over a pair of posts a rigidly secured to cover M, so as to become vertically alined with the posts. The beaks of the hooks 0 as well as the posts a are provided with longitudinal grooves 72 which are adapted to register with each other.

The hooks c as well as the posts a are adapted to be passed through corresponding perforations formed in the documents N to be filed, while the grooves .b will leave a clearance within said perforations.

Grooves b are adapted for the accommodation of the pins or shanks of a longitudinally arranged bail or retaining member d, the reach of which equals substantially the distance between grooves b, so that the shanks will be received within the clearance of the perforations in the documents.

To remove a number of sheets from the file, the top sheets to be segregated are folded to the left over hooks 0. The bail d is then placed with its cross bar upon the stack of the remaining sheets, so that its upwardly extending shanks will be received within grooves b. The top sheets are next folded back upon pins a, so as to become engaged by the shanks of bail d, the hooks 0 are opened, and the bail is raised, to lift the top sheets off the stack. In this way the sheets that have been removed will be securely connected to each other, so that their relative position is not disturbed. If desired, the bail may be placed with its cross piece on the top of the sheets to be removed, the operation being in other respects the same as above described.

It is evident that by the construction described, any one particular sheet may also be readily withdrawn, or that a number of sheets carried by bail 03, may be incorporated into the file without displacing them.

With the construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the beaks of hooks 0 as well as the posts a are flattened, these flattened portions being the equivalents of groove 1). In this case, the shanks of bail al have a semicircular or segmental shape in cross section so as to fill out the cut away portions of the hooks and posts and form complements of the latter.

In Figs. 7 and 8, the hook a is flattened as at b for the accommodation of a thin wire or sheet metal strip 03 which may be passed through the sheets and may then be turned over to form a bail that connects the sheets to be removed.

I claim:

1. A file for documents comprising a hookshaped member having a beak which has a longitudinally extending cut away section, and a sheet-retaining member adapted to engage said cut away section.

2. A file for documents, comprising a pair of recessed posts, a pair of hinged hooks having recessed beaks adapted to be alined with the posts, and a bail having shanks adapted to be engaged by the recessed posts and hooks.
