ARTHUR F. CROWELL, 0F SPOKANE, WASHINGTON.
HARNESS.
Application filed November 18, 1911.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR F. CROWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to harnesses and has for an object to provide'a harness embodying new and improved features of convenience, economy and reliability. A further object of the invention is to provide in a harness the combination with harness elements and the elements of eveners and whiflletrees connected.
With these and other objects in View the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawingsz-Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the evener and whiftletree members with the supporting bands. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the evener and whiflletree members. Fig. 3 is a view in end elevation of the entire harness, consisting of the evener and whiflletree members with supporting band, with collar, and means connecting the collar to the whiffietree and the draft connecting means. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of one end of the whiffletree members.
Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In the improved harness which forms the subject matter of this application two whiffletrees 10 and 11 curved to conform to the curvature of the body of a horse are provided, adapted to be suspended beneath the body and be supported by back bands 12 and 13 respectively. The back bands are connected with the whiflietrees by forming an eye 14; directly in the ends of each of the whiftletree members, which said eye is shown in enlarged detail in Fig. 4:, such whiffletrees being preferably, though not necessarily, constructed of spring metal and the back bands 12 provided with ordinary snap hooks 15 for engagement with the eyes 1 1.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 2d, 1915.
Serial N0.'661,160.
An evener 16 is employed having a central upward curvature and having its opposite ends, as 17 and 18, pivotally connected with the middle portions of the whiflietrees 10 and 11 by means of clevises 19 and 20. The upwardly curved center of the evener, as shown particularly at Fig. 1, is provided with an car 21 having a plurality of openings therein to receive a draft applying means as the chain 22, shown in Fig. 3, such upward curvature bringing the point of draft substantially in alinement with the xtremities of the whifiietrees 10 and 11.
Adjacent the extremities of the whifiietrees notches 23 are cut in their rear edges near the eyes 1 1, and each notch receives a link 2% which is of a size to pass completely over the eye and is held on the whiflietree by the snap hook 15. To each link a chain or other attaching member 25 is connected which in turn is connected with the collar 26. The upward curve of the evener is provided with a handle member 27 by which the entire device may be conveniently lifted.
In operation the whifiietree and evener member are suspended beneath the body of the horses by passing the back bands 12 and 18 over the backs of the horses where by the curvature of the whittletrees 10 and 11 accommodates the body so that the up wardly curved center of the evener is disposed between the horses bodies. The collar 26 is applied in the usual way and the ends of the eveners connected thereto as above described.
I claim In a harness, the combination with an evener, and whiffletrees centrally pivoted to the ends thereof and each having at each extremity an eye and near the latter a notch in its rear edge; of attaching members con nected with the collar of the harness, links carried by the rear ends of said members and adapted to pass bodily over the eyes at opposite ends of the whiffletrees and rest in the notches thereof, the back bands, and snap hooks at the extremities of the latter adapted to engage said eyes and hold the links in position.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR F. CROVVELL.
